And that was during a lockdown. Yoh!
Yup that as well, though we were at stage 2 to 4 load shedding through December, but it stopped around the 13th. The low capacity was during the holiday season so no shedding was needed as demand was like 23.

kooberg hasnt been taken offline yet, eksom just released a statement

Correction - "...planned to now commence on Sat. 10th, should the grid conditions have recovered to ensure stability of the system."

Part of the reason would be transmission losses. Demand of 1GW in CT requires a lot more generating capacity if the supply is far away in Mpumalanga. With margins so thin, frequency instability also becomes an issue.

Power loss from MP to WC is still in the single digit percentages IIRC.

... and it's going off for 6 months is it not? (sorry I didn't read the article and all the posts.) What are the chances that the grid conditions will stay recovered for those 6 months? What could possibly go wrong!?

Yes, off for 6 months.
It shouldn't have a big influence on the larger picture, not a big enough contributor, but things are supposedly too tight right now. Anyone's guess what's real, or not, IMO.

Well it can be difference between 1 stage of load shedding and we can't really afford to go to higher levels as it is.
