A press conference that long must surely have these two items;
1. A lot of detail trying to explain the many, many breakdowns since winter.
2. Sustainable energy plans.

So I'll give most / all of it a miss and get my running commentary here :thumbsup:

Also basically catching up for the many many press conferences they should've had since we've been 2 months of LS

And it's not even that hot. It's going to be fun when the heat hits and the aircons go on...
Aircons actually don't use as much as heaters do, so this would be about the normal for Jan, I think this is heaters as it's been a really weird spring, it's been scorching then it's been raining and chilly.

On the upside, Eskom should be able to generate more solar power but I think Eskoms installed solar is much lower than wind. I've seen some days where wind produces up to 2GW of power.

Solar works wonders, during the day. Not so much at peaks, this is why the 53GW of proposed renewables isn't going to solve anything, we actually need 3 times that.

Inverter aircons don't use a lot. Most people still have non-inverters. And we're not even factoring in central aircon systems used in buildings, which is where the real demand would come from.

It's not winter cold, so I doubt it's heaters. We just put the aircon on warm for a bit and switched it off, I'm sure most are managing fine without heaters.

If you have a look at what they're generating and what the demand is, both aren't even that high. Any slight increase to demand is going to send us to stage 4...

Company I was at used liquid "cold" storage. They would run chillers to freeze large amounts of water during off peak hours, and then during peak times use that ice to cool down air for the aircon system

This is SA, most people actually have 40w fans if that. Having lived here my entire life I've known 4 people with aircons, maybe it's a JHB thing but there aren't a lot of aircons that I've seen in private homes.

Yep, our current house is the only house I have lived in with an aircon, and we don't use it as often as I thought we would. My inlaws house at Pecanwood has aircon in every bedroom and a central evaporative cooler, all are used extensively in summer.

I know two people with aircons in their homes, and they both have health/weight issues and struggle to regulate their body temperature.

It really depends on where you are. Seen lots of people with aircon in Jo'burg.

There's a doccie on one of the DStv channels that I just saw, shows how they're now trying to store overnight etc. in Europe using gravity and heavy pulley "bricks" and weights. One system uses 6 cranes. Doing quite well with it already.
Also, some cryogenic freezing & thawing of plain air (just filtered).
