This sounds like a really useful little facility!!
2 questions - hope someone can answer:
If the user pays - can you set your own pricing structure or are you limited to the std pricing models?
You say really cheap... how cheap is that?

If the user pays, it will be at his bundle rates for his normal APN (at the moment), although I have been told that this will be changing soon (different billing per APN). On MTN at least. Not sure about Vodacom yet, but can find out.

How cheap? Hmmm. I cant disclose our exact APN pricing for obvious reasons (we have both Voda and MTN APNs), but I can tell you this much - the per MB charge is in line with what you pay per MB on the top 1GB packages, if not cheaper. It all depends on volume.

I don't think Sunday is the last day of the month.....

We've been so wrong with the date for pre-paid that any date I now give carries little meaning :o BUT I've got a good feeling about 1st of November....i.e. Tuesday.

COOL

It's probably pushing it hoping for carry over though

Hopefully some kind of "Rollover" feature is included in the bundles. Like normal prepaid.

Speaking of which ... still have half my bandwidth left on 3G ... and I HAVE to use it! :)

Does this mean it will be priced the same as a contract deal? meaning that you will pay the same for 1 gig on contract as you would for 1 gig on prepaid?

That seems to be the case. So 1Gig on prepaid should cost you R499, just like 1Gig on contract does. This is good news. Wish they implemented carry-over though!

It would be advisable to determine your bandwidth needs before purchasing a hefty gig bundle, so not to lose unused data at the end of the month. Luckily it seems Vodacom will be offering the ability to load multiple bundles, so when you run out of, say 250MB, you can just buy another 250MB.

The optimal solution would be to determine your exact requirements for a month, as you will then benefit from the lower R/mb rates of bigger bundles in stead of buyin two 250MB bundles where one 500Mb would give you a lower rate.

I'm very happy to see Vodacom launch this. Now I can purchase a pre-paid sim, load it with databundles and stick it into my SE V800. I'll be using my SE V800 JUST as a 3G modem from now on. The phone features are great, but I hardly ever use MMS / Camera AND the fact that the V800's bluetooth is slightly broken means I can't use it with my carkit. Looking to downgrade to a good 'ol greyscale Ericsson T39m.

@ erike

As far as I know, I am paying R599 for my one gig contract but I reckon its more expensive than the ad-hoc or pre-paid bundles because you are paying for the data card. Would be nice if they lowered it to R499.

Edit: On vodacom.co.za it states that for existing contract subscribers, it is R599 for 1Gb. So it's cheaper to go pre-paid using a 3g phone as your modem. :)

precisely ... it seems early adopters get shafted again by taking contracts. we should be getting benifits for signing up , not the other way around.

Pre-paid bundles are due for imminent launch and some of you have already been told d-day is tomorrow, the 1st of November. In reality, the guys are still testing and if they're not 100% comfortable they might push it out a day or two.

Pre-paid will be exactly on the same capacities and pricing as the 'normal' bundles, i.e. R499 for a gig, etc.

You can buy a bundle at any time and it is valid for 30 days, from date of purchase..

See posting in pre-paid sticky thread for some important info.

Contract 1G (card + data) R599. You get a modem (3G data card)
Bundled 1G (data only) R499. You need to buy your own modem.

So you pay R100 per month for the card.

On contract you pay R499 per Gig after the first Gig.

so u can buy data as u need it ... but if i need an xtra 3 gigs this month on my contract , i cant get it , as the lady at the shop said once i take more data at the in bundle rate , i have to keep taking it for the remainder of the contract.

another thing v3g : when my contract expires in 2 years time and i choose to continue it , my data cost will still be 599 a month , and i bet they wont be giving me another data card (seeing that i have one already).
