I'll be leaving my current job, and planning to work abroad for the next couple of years.
Usually when moving jobs I transfer my provident fund to the nexts companies fund, but this won't be an option.
So I will need to open up a separate preservation fund and transfer my provident fund to it.

I was thinking of going with Old Mutual, as they handle my personal insurance. But I am not sure if there is any major difference between preservation fund you would find at Old Mutual versus other companies. Any recommendations of other preservation funds I should look at?

I would never invest with an insurer (they are historically expensive and still are, with not added benefit for that extra cost), I would use an asset manager like Coronation (no fees except the funds internal fees, only their funds) or Allan Gray (LISP, you pay fees to be on the various funds available on their platform, maybe no fees if only using AG fund/funds) or Sygnia (no extra fees if using on just their fund/s, extra fees if you use external funds on their LISP platform) or 10X (they only have the one fund).

Don't do old mutual. Their fees are too high. Who are you currently with in the fund? If they're decent, just stick it in their preservation fund

NEVER Old Mutual.

It will all disappear in fees that they aren’t up front about at all.

I’ve just moved it all away to 10X.

Currently I am with 10x, and seeing some of the comments it seems like a good place.

Then absolutely just leave it there.

Anywhere else you are in for a shocker when you see the fees coming off.

I have my preservation fund with them too. Solid option, with index funds and low fees. They'll ask you if you want a retail preservation fund or corporate umbrella preservation fund. Not much difference, but retail, from what I understood, you can put some extra cash in there if you so wish
