Pretoria WUG

Is there any open source software I can upgrade my ASUS WL-500G Deluxe with to join the wug?

I have been doing a bit of digging around on this one, and it does seem possible to remove the internal 2.4ghz mini-pci radio, and replace it with a 5.8ghz mini-pci radio. Also, it appears that both openwrt, and dd-wrt are supported on this unit.

A 802.11 abg radio should cost around about R220 or so from companies such as Uniterm, or Miro.

I cannot guarantee that this will work, but the threads I discovered on OpenWRT's site seem to indicate success. If you have a mini-pci card available which you can try, or borrow, rather than buying one, it would definately be worth a shot. You may find a compatible card inside a nearby laptop too.

If possible, give this a shot, and let us know the results?

Keep on Wugging! :D

Thanks! :o

Newbie to WUG,Question?

Good Day to you all
If i understand correctly the PTA:WUG is:
The PTA-WUG is not a ISP and does not supply internet connectivity,
but it does Act like a large wireless network for:
File-Sharing
Gaming LAN
...
Is that correct, what else does it offer?

Friends, experimentation, voip, streaming audo, streaming cameras, etc etc etc...

Teaches you lots about Linux, Routing, Servers, PC's, etc etc etc...

Imagine being able to download the latest Fedora Linux 4gb image in 30mins and not using up your internet cap to do it...

Imagine being able to speak to your friends using VOIP for free...

Imagine downloading the latest Windows service pack in minutes, for free...

Think of it as a big lan... anything u can do there, you can do on a wug...

VOIP
Anything that can run on TCP/IP
A great learning experience - routing, wifi, etc. - fun hobby.
Networking with other IT people

And a free jean pant if you join today !!! :P hehehe :P

I think the WUG concept is great. I hope to be joining fellow PTA wuggers soon.

For now, I will keep on listing a long list of excuses such as interest rates, cold weather, petrol price, the Zimbabwe situation, etc. to keep Protz off of my back while I procrastinate a bit more . . . ;)

Thanks it sounds awesome:D
How many of you guys use ut to play LAN games like COD4?
Alot better to play it over this network, than to use up your precious cap.

Exactly!

I cant speak for ptawug, but I would say the most we ever had playing cod4 on jawug was about 12.... There are daily cod4, css, tf2, ut2004, war3, dota games etc....

If you join your local wug, you could host your own game server - thats the way it works... everybody helps to build, maintain and improve....
