Fellas, I have an opportunity to buy a well cared for, previous generation MBP. It'as an early 2008 model, 2.4GHz (the entry level model) with 256MB nVidia graphics, 200GB disc and 2GB memory. It was purchased just before the new ones were announced, has a matt screen, is in mint condition and has the added benefit that I know the seller.

I was asked to make an offer. So the question is, how much should I pay? I would like tom make an offer that's a good deal to me but at the same time don't try to take advantage of the seller. What's a reasonable price rance for a secondhand MBP?

Another one, how much would one get for a
Mac Pro, v1.1
Dual Core Xeon
2Ghz x 2
3 GB of Ram.

I know replacing the hard drive in the MBP is a little involved, but does anyone here know if doing it will actually void your warranty?

Working with this machine gives me mixed feelings. I can feel the power of the graphic processor kicking in in Aperture - import 8GB of images last night (generating thumbnails and previews) happened much quicker than on my MacBook, but during this process the desktop was much less responsive than I'm used to. So I'd like to get a 7200rpm drive in it as quickly as I can, along with upgrading the memory.

I always understood it would but since you're in the UK and YMMV you better give Apple a call at least that way you have it from the horses mouth.

I just did. They say it will invalidate the warranty, but I can take the MBP with the drive I wish to use to the Apple Store and they'll do it for me. My warranty ends in April, and I plan to get the Apple Care for it, so I don't want to void the warranty.

Then again, I wonder if they would notice if I do? There was nothing on the MacBook that showed that it had been opened.

How much are they going to charge you?

He didn't mention a price - I should have asked. I'll ask when making the appointment - that won't be before payday has arrived and the 500gb 7200rpm drives have become available.
