A client bought a Samsung printer in the UK and now finds local toner cartridges don't work because the printer is region coded.

Is there a way around this ?

Order printer cartridges from the UK?

I know HP allows you to recode once.. Maybe contact samsung.

Yeah Samsung suck. They also do not allow you toprimt more than the claimed yeild per cartridge, even if you print blank pages. I will never support such business practices.

I think that there are two options. One is to purchase a printer firmware that will circumvent the georestriction and the other is to order a new chip and just replace the one on the SA cartridge. If you can post more details regarding the model of the printer and the cartridge I'll see if I can find something for you.

You can find the chips on Alibaba/Aliexpress (prices vary a lot so look around) ...

I heard that was a possibility - I presume this would void any warranty.

[-]There should be a way to bypass the DRM - normally something like holding OK and Cancel for 10 seconds. Google "how to refill cartridges in printer XYZ", normally instructions are listed in there.[/-]

EDIT (I FORGOT IT WAS CAPS LOCK DAY TODAY)

THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO BYPASS THE DRM - NORMALLY SOMETHING LIKE HOLDING OK AND CANCEL FOR 10 SECONDS. GOOGLE "HOW TO REFILL CARTRIDGES IN PRINTER XYZ", NORMALLY INSTRUCTIONS ARE LISTED THERE.

Apparently HP does the same.
hmmm...think I must commandeer my dad's old HP laser when I get a chance. Really don't want to deal with this modern DRM crap.

Same with power drills....no I don't want that new Bosch drill...I want the old one. :D

A supplier in Maitland, Cape Town will refill laser toner and reset the chip or disable it altogether. This worked for a Samsung, Xerox and HP printer

This local company supplies many of the Samsung toner chips but you need to make sure that it will support the UK/EUR zone. If you install the wrong chip you can apparently disable the printer permanently - just check the reviews on Amazon UK for some of the problems with Samsung compatible cartridges. The toner chip should be very simple to remove - just look for a YouTube video. It should be a lot cheaper to order chips from China if you need several though.
