After looking at the other topics in this forum I feel like a bit of a softy but it is the right place to ask so anyways. My family needs a new printer. Currently have an old HP inkjet and it is a mission having to trek to the printer and plug in my laptop in order to print something. The prints aren't of great quality either and the cost of replacing cartridges is pretty high as well.

I was thinking of a colour laser printer, wireless is a must. I have looked at the Samsung site and they have a pretty good one that scans, copies and prints. HP have nothing like that. I am not sure what other brands to look at though. Also I am not sure how to do "costing" I am pretty sure it will work out cheaper though.

Are there any printers you would recommend, what sort of difference is there in price and the amount of prints you can get out of a toner vs ink cartridge?

Thanks

How often do you print or how many prints do you do per month?

I'm very happy with my HP Officejet all in one but I don't print much at all. I scan stuff or save/print to pdf and email.

I've had a very bad experience with a Samsung printer. I bought one of those multifunction ones to use as a fax machine. With very minimal use the paper feed is completely broken. It pulls paper in halfway and then just jams. Of course I only noticed the problem after the warranty expired. I won't buy any Samsung printer again.

I've had HP laser printers (B&W) working flawlessly for years now.

I for one can recommend Canon printers though... I have had an HP multifunction printer. First round worked well, but it started aging prettying quickly.

Got a Canon MP610 now, it's around three years old and works like a bomb. A similar model costs around R1200 now, then it has wireless included. Uses single ink.

If you want to go laser rather, Canon laser printers are rather expensive. HP laser printers are pretty good afaik, as are the Samsung ones from what I've heard.

I checked Frontosa's Samsung toner prices, compared them to retail stores - averaged around R450-550 for each colour (black and 3 colour).

So a whole lot of mixed reports. HP didn't seem to have anything that did everything at a decent price. Would you say you get more prints out of a toner than out of a cartridge?

Does not make sense. Toner is the powder that a laser printer uses. Inkjet printers use ink. They both come in cartridges.

In general, toner cartridges are more expensive than ink ones, but you get vastly more pages out of them, about 1500-2000 for toner vs 200-300 for ink.

Anyone tried the new HP Officejet Pro printers? HP claim output yields similar to laser printers per cartridge.

We have the OfficeJet 8500A Pro Plus - yield def not as high as they claim, but way higher and cheaper than old school inkjets. We print 100-200 color pages a week and it's good for that. The double sided printing in the Plus model is a fantastic feature, and AirPrint is great.
