I have been trying to research a concept without any luck (my keywords are clearly wrong for a google search!)

Is it possible to setup a network between two ADSL routers. Scenario is I want to link to offices, each have an ADSL line and a router at each end. Each has an external IP. How do I do this, if at all possible so that the network "extended" across the two?

I dont think a VPN configured on one of the routers is the way I want to go...

Any of you smart people got an answer to this?

Not one, both. 2 x Billion 7402G routers will do the trick. They allow IPSec (VPN protocol) endpoints to be defined as dyndns addresses (required as you cant have fixed IP address on ADSL).

This will allow the LANs behind each router to access each other seamlessly.
 
OPenVPN or Linksys Routers with dd-WRT <-- It has an VPN edition

I have linked to sites using DD-WRT (Standard) using built in VPN client.

Its just not an very cost effective method......
 
hmmm that openvpn wont install the virtual ethernet driver on my machine...

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I dont really like opensource software, you have to have a degree in mess-around-ology to get it to work.
 
1) If u don't have time/patience to use OpenVPN - Use WIndows VPN s/ware in the MS server OS but if u don't want to mess with OpenVPN i'm guessing u aint too technically minded so that may not be a good option either.

2) If u really battle then buy two of those routers that have the wizards for setting up VPN between routers.

3) SOme ISPs provide solutions for this scenario and they do the work for u by setting it up and maintaining it but that is pricey.

Personally I like OpenVPN and while it took a bit of time to learn and get right it was worth it in the end. The downside for ur scenario would be that u'd need two servers (1 at each office) so if each office doesn't have a permanent server/PC running Win2K or higher then a bridged connection wouldn't work for u.

Finally if u really want someone else to do this for you depending on your location and braches locations I can recommend 1/2 companies that can assist you.

Yeh, so dont be a sucker for punishment. If you want it to work without hassle just get 2 of the Billions as I suggested. You can pick them up for ~ R1200 a piece. So R2400 total investment, no additional PCs, hw, sw, installing, tweaking or other BS.

The real trick to getting ADSL 2 ADSL (dyndns addr 2 dyndns addr) VPNs working is the devices/sw must have the logic to flush their DNS caches on tunnel failure prior to trying re-establishment. This is where most other solutions I've tried have failed as they cant handle addr changes on the remote-end properly.

An additional bonus on the Billions is, besides supporting robust dynamic site2site IPSec, they also do PPTP natively. So any Win2000/XP/Vista PC can be configured to VPN into them in 30sec flat, no extra sw or further BS required.
 
eish spend so much $$$ when u can just do it perfectly 4 free and easy with openvpn & dyndns..
doesn't matter what routers u have either..
