I've been in ADSL hell since early Jan.

It's actually a really long story but I'll try to keep it as short as possible.

My ADSL would drop at intermittent occasions. It's completely random. Usually when it drops and then reconnects, it connects at a really slow unstable speed, and then drops again. Sometimes I'll even have a downtime of a couple of hours. But, once again, all this is extremely intermittent.

Ok, before I get to the rest, let's cover troubleshooting first.

* Three routers, no difference.
* All filters replaced. Problem occurs even without filters connected.
* The physical external line has been replaced.
* All cables replaced.
* Telephones disconnected with no change.
* DSLAM changed.
* Port permanently changed.

In total since Jan I've had 5 Telkom technicians at my premises. The first 3 where "hit and run" technicians who just rock up (usually when the connection is working - Murphy's Law), declare the line fine, and annoyingly closes the case.

The 4th one had speed problems and decided to change the DSLAM, and the 5th one, was here pretty much for a day struggling to get his own router connected and stable. He eventually had the theory that the analogue line and ADSL were somehow conflicting with each other. A theory I still kind of agree with. He then had the port permanent changed at the exchange. Unfortunately the issue still persists. I contacted him again, and he kindly informed that he won't be able to assist me further (even though he's the specialist they assigned to my case) because he is now assigned to a different area and that I'll have a log a fault again.

Mweb manages my Telkom line so all correspondence goes through them.

Here's some things I've discovered with my own personal troubleshooting.

* At times (quite often), when I pick up the phone, I can actually hear the ADSL line. It's like a static white noise based sound. When I disconnect the ADSL, the sound goes away completely. Also when the ADSL connects I get this short 56k connection based sound on the phone.
* Also, at times, when I pick up the phone, the ADSL line drops completely. I don't have to make a call or anything. Just a dial tone and the line drops. Replacing filters (different types as well) makes no difference.
* The line does not drop when receiving phone calls.
* When the ADSL line is completely dead at times, the only way to really get it back is to once again pick up the phone, listen to the dial tone for about 20 seconds, and the line should reconnect. This is however hit and miss affair as sometimes even though the line reconnects, the connection sometimes drops again after a few seconds. Very unstable.
* Different brands of phones makes no difference.
* Connection will sometimes work fine for say 2 days and then go back to unstable state. Extremely random and intermittent. Weather has no effect on the performance.

Ok and then finally the setup:

There are two cables that runs from the pole. One to the main house, and one to the servants quarters. The servants quarters hosts the master connection and this is also the connection the router is connected to. The cable running from the pole to the servants quarters has also been completely replaced recently.

So yeah, that's my story. 2 months and going. 5 technician later.

The 2 lines have different numbers? Because if they are the same number only one of them can be used if you have adsl.

Same number. ADSL is only used in the servants quarters. The main house does not use internet.

The other line will drop your adsl. Only one line can be used if you have adsl. You can either run an ethernet cable from the house or connect a cordless phone from the cottage.

Cordless phone would be cheaper to test with.

No you're misunderstanding. This is an extension installed by Telkom. Lots of people have this. 2 points at different locations even though it's the same line. There is no ADSL in the house. Only a telephone.

This all worked fine for years.

As long as they don't ring at the same time when there is an incoming call. That's all I can think of.

It's the same line. It's not an issue, I have 3 outlets split off the the line.

Sounds eerily like my problem but haven't gotten as far as you did with the technicians though as like you say everytime they come it is working fine and they disappear.

Mine started since last year getting progressively worse and lost count how many technicians have come.

It's so frustrating.

The only 2 things that left is...

a.) The phone connection inside the main house. It's like 15 years old or something. Unlikely to be the problem, but you never know.
b.) There's something wrong at the pole itself.

My cables outside are like over 50 years old so could be something wrong with them same with the pole, but how do we get them to check it though? Do you also find sometimes certain weather makes it worse?

I also found that calling my phone line and having a conversation made my line stats go back to normal for a while so my only temporary fix right now.

Yeah the calling thing you mentioned also seems to work for me at times. I also experience noise on the line at random occasions.

All I can say is welcome to hell. This is such a frustrating experience. I don't know what to tell you. 5 technicians later and still at square one.

Log a voice line fault for noise, don't mention adsl or internet.

I did that and they came today and claimed it was my pots filter even though it has been changed a few times this year hoping it fixed the problem.

Apparently the noise isn't on the distribution box according to him so could be the cabling although the day before he said he heard the noise when he called my home line (from the UMC box):p.

Been there, unfortunately done that.

They claim is line is clear, and obviously at the times the techies are here, the line is indeed clear.

I just picked up the phone, and there's noise. Also besides the noise, I can hear the ADSL connection if that makes sense. Disconnect the ADSL and the white noise is gone. Also when I pick up the phone, the ADSL disconnects after 10 seconds. I don't even have to make a call, just dial tone.

We had a storm earlier and surprisingly the line was quiet and nothing dropped this time and the line stats stayed fine.

Yep quite frustrating when they say pots filter which isn't true as it would be all the time :p

Correct. Replaced all the filters. Heck even without the filters (and obviously phones), I still experience the same problem(s).

Edit: Actually disconnected while typing this reply.

Same here and it has also been terrible tonight

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2592 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 11.5 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 8.0 db

Not sure if it is a coincidence but it seems to gives worse problems every 2nd night

Not closed so hope that is a good thing

I can't believe it! Argh!

So I phone Mweb for the millionth time to see what the hell is happening.

No sir, we are still awaiting on Telkom.

So I decide, screw this and I phone Telkom directly. Had to hold 40 damn minutes only to find out that someone closed the damn case. I mean I've had this problem for 2.5 months now. Stop closing the f**king cases if the problem is not resolved for heavens sake.

I'm getting this feeling this issue is never going to be resolved.
