I've been in ADSL hell since early Jan.
It's actually a really long story but I'll try to keep it as short as possible.
My ADSL would drop at intermittent occasions. It's completely random. Usually when it drops and then reconnects, it connects at a really slow unstable speed, and then drops again. Sometimes I'll even have a downtime of a couple of hours. But, once again, all this is extremely intermittent.
Ok, before I get to the rest, let's cover troubleshooting first.
* Three routers, no difference.
* All filters replaced. Problem occurs even without filters connected.
* The physical external line has been replaced.
* All cables replaced.
* Telephones disconnected with no change.
* DSLAM changed.
* Port permanently changed.
In total since Jan I've had 5 Telkom technicians at my premises. The first 3 where "hit and run" technicians who just rock up (usually when the connection is working - Murphy's Law), declare the line fine, and annoyingly closes the case.
The 4th one had speed problems and decided to change the DSLAM, and the 5th one, was here pretty much for a day struggling to get his own router connected and stable. He eventually had the theory that the analogue line and ADSL were somehow conflicting with each other. A theory I still kind of agree with. He then had the port permanent changed at the exchange. Unfortunately the issue still persists. I contacted him again, and he kindly informed that he won't be able to assist me further (even though he's the specialist they assigned to my case) because he is now assigned to a different area and that I'll have a log a fault again.
Mweb manages my Telkom line so all correspondence goes through them.
Here's some things I've discovered with my own personal troubleshooting.
* At times (quite often), when I pick up the phone, I can actually hear the ADSL line. It's like a static white noise based sound. When I disconnect the ADSL, the sound goes away completely. Also when the ADSL connects I get this short 56k connection based sound on the phone.
* Also, at times, when I pick up the phone, the ADSL line drops completely. I don't have to make a call or anything. Just a dial tone and the line drops. Replacing filters (different types as well) makes no difference.
* The line does not drop when receiving phone calls.
* When the ADSL line is completely dead at times, the only way to really get it back is to once again pick up the phone, listen to the dial tone for about 20 seconds, and the line should reconnect. This is however hit and miss affair as sometimes even though the line reconnects, the connection sometimes drops again after a few seconds. Very unstable.
* Different brands of phones makes no difference.
* Connection will sometimes work fine for say 2 days and then go back to unstable state. Extremely random and intermittent. Weather has no effect on the performance.
Ok and then finally the setup:
There are two cables that runs from the pole. One to the main house, and one to the servants quarters. The servants quarters hosts the master connection and this is also the connection the router is connected to. The cable running from the pole to the servants quarters has also been completely replaced recently.
So yeah, that's my story. 2 months and going. 5 technician later.
