After updating my 2012 Mac to macOS Catalina it will not show my external hard drives. The drive is recognized on the disk utility but when I try to mount it I got the following message "Could not mount “Backup HD”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49244.)"I tried to google for help but to no avail.

Is this your time machine backup drive? My time machine kept working just fine.
No just normal external drives that I use to store and watch downloaded movies . The iMac does not recognize the drives anymore , never had this problem before the latest update

What format is your drive? Did you perhaps use NTFS drivers before your update?

According to Disk Utility it is a Tuxera NTFS system on my drive. Never had problems before ?
Yeah, so just as a word of note, MacOS does not support the NTFS file system out the box.

I would suggest updating and reinstalling Tuxera, which is the program that's running on your machine that is enabling your mac to access NTFS drives.

Catalina Made changes to extensions, which I recall is used by Tuxera. Rather remove it, restart and try again. MacOS can read NTFS out of the box.

I've always used some driver utility to access NTFS drives, as they could always be read but not written to.

The only problem I had is with an Adobe program. Otherwise it’s been plain sailing.

You cannot run any 32 bit apps

I had that issue as well. Updated Tuxera and the issue was solved. I reverted back to Mojave by reformatting my MacBook Pro though. Didn't realize how many 32bit apps I still use until I couldn't any longer. Will give it a go in a few months once all my app vendors have sorted themselves out for Catalina.

Only issues I had was permissions for apps which it didn’t auto add eg vmware fusion.

Fixed that along with ntfs write.
