Check your connection profile settings on the desktop install (apn, etc.). These normally survive a re-install.

Got to agree with the above! I port my E220 all over the place! While on vacation and sometimes just to see if someone can use HSDPA from home!

Your APN must be set to: internet
No logon or password required so leave blank!

I'll just add this although I'm not convinced its correct! Pop your USB modem onto another USB port and re-install. This has fixed some problems in the past but I've no idea as to why??

It's to do with Windows and it's wonderful management of drivers. When you plug your modem into a USB port the driver is loaded for that specific port.

Then when the modem stops working on that port (typically due to the phase of the moon combined with your average toenail length), you plug it into a new USB port and the drivers are re-loaded for that port. And you can work again.

no guys, have tried changing the apn to internet. no good. called up vodacom tech guys .. uninstalled the modem from connection options and restarted the whole process.. no good. i'm running version 2.2 of the software and they suggested i get another version and run that .. so gonna give it a try .. any other suggestions?
