I'm not sure if this should be in the vodacom thread or not.

I have two boxes, one with linux / windows and the other with linux.

Using ssh I can connect from either of the two to the other - they are both running ssh servers.

But the problem is I cannot do this over the vodacom 3g network, it only works over the LAN. I have tried disabling the firewall on both machines but I cannot even ping the one from the other when using vodacom.

Is there something to vodacom that stops me from connecting directly to another pc?

I get an IP addrss like 41.x.x.x on both machines. Shouldn't they be able to 'see' each other?

Do you have the required ports open on Vodacom 3G?

ssh uses port 22 to listen on, so first figure out if vodacom has that port opened.

Yes :) Vodacom blocks ALL incoming ports via their firewalls even if you receive a public IP on the internet APN.

You need to contact the data helpdesk and fax them an application form for the 'unrestricted' APN. You then need to change the APN on your dialer and then this will allow you to connect to your boxes.

Hmm, so should I enable the 'unrestricted' or the 'internetvpn'?

Does mtn also do this? If I just use mtn will it work without having to activate things with the service provider?

'internetvpn' has been discontinued since it is functionally no different from the 'internet' APN.

IIRC MTN still provides private (rfc1918) IP's on their default APN. This means that all their users are behind a giant NAT gateway and there is no way to connect in from the outside world. Can someone confirm ?

I'm going to phone 155 today and hopefully they understand enough english to activate the restricted apn.

I already feel depressed knowing that I have to phone their call centre :)

For some reason I cannot access the vodacom.co.za site. Is it just me? When I try to go there it says "Access Denied by intermediary. Domain not recognized."

And from internet explorer it gives me a "you are not authorized to view this page" error.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Just to make sure: is it the ports that are blocked or the fact that the IP is not public?

Would it be possible to connect to another machine if it is ALSO on the vodacom network but just change the ports that the ssh server is listening to to another port which is open by vodacom?
