Problem playing .avi movies in Win 7

Hi Guys

I've been having a problem playing .avi movies in Win 7

When I try through VLC or XBMC then I get the following image:

When I try through Windows Media Player it downloads some VIO PLayer application but still doesn't work.

I've also tried a few codec packs as well as re-downloading the file but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?
 
uninstall all codec packs... download klite codec pack. when running setup choose advance mode and select reset all setting back to default.. then complete installation. make sure u also select media player classic as default player and play the file.
 
Ok I did as you suggested but mpc is also doing the same. Any other ideas?
 
mp4/mkv work fine?

Download a youtube video and see if you can play, use 1 click add on firefox if you don't know how.
 
I use Windows 7 Codec Pack and it has never failed me. Posting from my phone, so just Google for the link.
 
On a virgin Win 7 or Win 8 installation, OOB or fully updated, 32 or 64 - bit, VLC will play anything. If you research these "codec packs" and learn what they can break you will never install them again. VLC FTW!
 
I also had a problem with only avi files. My windows media player, only use stock, would crash. Any other format would play fine.

I'm not sure this is your problem, but I trace it to windows update KB2670838. After removing it, everything works again.

It hasn't failed me. Just don't install any crapware that the installer wants. It hasn't broken anything on my system as well.

I use Gomplayer www.gomlab.com, I dislike VLC with a passion, due to grief it gave me years ago and I won't use it now due that fact, burnt once etc.
 
Try using Format Factory to convert the video.
It can be even back to avi or any of the other video formats.
 
Try using the combined community codec pack - http://www.cccp-project.net/

I've been using it for years and it has never failed.
After the initial install, it has options to reset all codec settings so hopefully that will fix your issue.
I use windows media player classic with it
 
Which codec is it encoded with? Install that codec. Download VirtualDub and scan the file.
