I bought BF3 yesterday and after the long process of installing it with the updates I finally was able to start the game up.It was about to launch when it said my gpu drivers are outdated so I updated to AMD catalyst 12.3.After the update I started the game up and all of a sudden while the game was loading the gpu started making a loud noise and the screen went blank but I can here the game running in the background. The noise wasn't like something suddenly broke,it was the gpu fan that sped up to most probably 100%.My specs are Q8200,4gig ram,HD 6850 and a 520W vantec ion psu. What could be the problem?

BF3 takes an awful long time to load first time you start it. Try play single player to see if it works, shoot some bots, then load up multiplayer again. Multiplayer should work if the singleplayer does.

I tried single player same problem I think it maybe my drivers since I never remove my old gpu drivers before installing the new one?

I have a 6850 and BF3 runs great with ATI catalyst 12.1, not a single hiccup.

Thanks I will try both 12.1 and 11.12.I got the game to run for a few seconds(using12.3) I took two steps and the screen went blank saying no signal and the fan on my gpu started speeding up.

running 12.3 atm , seems fine, had pretty much most drivers on my pc, all them worked for me.

Sounds like the PSU does not have enough power for gfx card.

The psu only has 2x 20A on the 12V rail and the gfx card might require more.

Do you have the power specs of the 6850?

Try different drivers, i am using 11.11c

Also get driver cleaner and remove all amd drivers and reload them.

That seems highly unlikely. 6850 uses 132W at most, that is 11A...

I tried 12.1 with the same problem I'm going to try 11.12 and 11.11 now will let you'll know what happens.

I tried all of the above drivers but still the same thing.I use driver sweep each time to reinstall,is it necessary to also run driver sweep in safe mode?I read some where that some files stay behind and can only be removed in safe mode?

fossil, when you try to install another driver version, does it say something about a clean install? I know the nVidia driver installation has that option.

I never tried while I had another version installed.I only tried installing after I first removed the old version.I will give it a try now and tell you if they do ask for a clean install.

I have had a slight break through I did a stress test and the same thing happens so it's not just with BF3.I saw that one IDE cable was blocking the fan of the gpu and I moved it and started BF3.I now see that it runs for some time then it suddenly minimizes to desktop and stops responding?Could it be that the IDE cable was really causing the increased fan speed?

Yes problem solved, three weeks prior to installing BF3 I installed a second HDD which was a mission since the gpu block three out of four sata ports. So I forced the gpu a bit and managed to get the sata cable into one of the blocked sata ports.I only remembered that now and removing the one sata cable that was obstructing I ran the game and it worked perfectly.Only problem now is that after 30 minutes of running BF3 I noticed my gpu temp is 93 degrees(medium settings). Is this a reasonable temp?I do admit there is quite a bit of dust of the gpu fan but will it cause such high temps?

93 is a problem yup.

It can run at 90 but it should not be running at 90. All you need to do is go and put the gpu fan on 60% in CCC and it should be fine. If it's already around there you need to clean it and ensure it is getting some airflow.

I don't know about other people but when i install fresh amd/ati drivers my fan is at 25%. I am also not sure if the new drivers have a platform that increases the fan speed as needed but up until 11.11c it never worked like that.

Won't the fan increase automatically with gpu usage and is it safe to set the fan to 60%.From what I understand setting it at 60% means that the speed is fixed at 60%.I saw MSI afterburner my temps went to 93 while my max fan speed was 91.Now if I sent it to 60% constant won't it make the heating worse?

set your fan speed to max 100% if it can run the game and see if your temp still gets up to 90c u will need some extra cooling in your case :D
