Hi all, I was wondering if this is a common issue and if there is some way for it to be solved? This is an email I got from Afrihost regarding setting up a line to the new flat I moved into.

"Please be advised that I have checked the number and find that there are no ports available in your area.
Please note that when there are no ports it is not possible to get adsl as a new client.
Telkom has to first allocate ports for new clients in the area to get adsl which can take weeks or months.
It is advisable to contact Telkom first to find out how soon that can be done before signing up with any ISP for adsl."

What baffles me is that in practically all the flats around mine have internet/WiFi. Is it an issue solely with Afrihost or something greater?
All help/advice would be greatly appreciated xD

Generally means that the Telkom exchange is used to capacity, even though your neighbours might have ADSL. What's your nr, let me check for you

It is a problem which happens at times, if the exchange is full / no available ports then Telkom will have to change your order to a project and add extra ports to the exchange or you will have to wait for a current ADSL client to cancel and then you will take their port once it becomes available.

Best bet is to place an order for ADSL with Telkom themselves and just keep following up every now and then. I had that issue once although managed to get a spot within 2 weeks. This was a while back, when there was 384, 512 and 4Mbit still.

I personally would rather be dealing with Telkom directly for such an issue as opposed to an ISP.
I had Telkom install my telephone line and ADSL line within the last 7 days and I must say, I had a very pleasant experience dealing with them. Quick and efficient.

Monday I asked for a Telephone line, it was installed on Thursday.
Monday I asked for it to be converted to an ADSL line (through Telkom themselves after WebAfrica were unable to get Telkom to close the still open telephone line order), the lady said she needed to log a call with a different department to get the telephone line order closed and that first thing Tuesday morning she will be able to place the order for the ADSL as then the telephone line order should be closed.

Low and behold, I call Telkom on Tuesday morning at 10AM. "Yes sir, we see on our system that the telephone line has been closed and there is an order for a 4Mbit DSL line. The reference number is xxx".

At 12.30PM I get an SMS telling me my ADSL line is active and I may proceed with the self install option. Got home, verified the line and started browsing after my DSL line re-synced. :D

Ah ok. I'll get right onto asking Telkom to install a new port for me. Is this a free charge or will I need to pay for it? Also, am I right in saying that I'd just want the ADSL line and not a package as I'd prefer to go with another ISP? Lol, no way in hell I'd randomly hand out my number haha xD

Yeah, you shouldn't need to pay extra for them to improve upon their infrastructure ;)

Yes, just the telephone line and ADSL line from them. No bundle / no account. :D
