My year old (and fully updates) PS3 has decided it doesn't want to read games anymore even though it plays DVDs just fine. Any ideas?

In my experience it is a common problem if you use the drive a lot. After while it has problems reading BD disks, it usually takes a few years though. Is it over or just under a year old from purchase?

Prior to this did your PS3 games freeze or take longer to load before its refusal to play games?
Does it still play bluray movies?
My buddy had the same problem whereby his blueray laser died.but his red laser was still fine to read dvds and play ps2 games.
Then a year later his ps3 harddrive became corrupt and after reformatting the ps3 hdd it worked fine!
The latter event was merely a software issue.

I suggest you try this if you haven't already.
Good luck bwana.;)

Not sure really, my nephew uses it a lot more than I do so I'll ask. I'll reformat the hard drive tomorrow and see if that helps.

Thanks :)

It's definitely broken. Can I have it? No? Well, I reckon it's your blu-ray laser. PS3's have 2 lasers, one used for DVD's and CD's and the other for Blu-rays.

My PS3 conked out yesterday with the same problem, i managed to fix mine by reinstalling a driver that was corrupted. Ive sent you a PM with exactly how to do this.

@snakepit you think you can post the tutorial for future reference in case any other users experience the same problems.

Thanks snakepit. I'll be getting the ps3 back from my nephew today so I'll give it a shot. From what I've been told it still pays bluray disks so a driver fault seems plausible.

Problem solved - it was software issue fortunately and a system restore sorted it out nicely. Thanks again everyone, particularly snakepit.
