Problems with new rig

Also can you please run download and run the file below. Run it in a window and monitor the CPU/GPU temps while it stresses the GPU?

Link? Currently using realtemp. It shows me my CPU temps but doesn't show the GPU temps (option is greyed out).

I am no pro so if this makes no sense, then ignore it , but you said you think its a sound problem. I think u can disable sound cards in the bios and try running the machine without sound... could b a faulty board.

That was one of the first things I tried, thanks for the input though. :)

A while back my PC started to do simmelar things to yours. freazing and shuting down after a few minutes. First thought it was GPU getting hot, then the CPU. Took a while to figure out that it was the North bridge over heating. Placed a fan over it and all of a sudden no more problems. Try that. Never know.

Just borrow some ram from your neighbour. If it still freezes you at least know its not the ram. Then borrow a GPU. After that it can just be the mobo or cpu as you tried it already with a diff PSU.
Edit. Where u located Fudzy? if close to somerset west, bring me the rig an ill troubleshoot it for you.

Thanks dude, I stay on the east coast though :(

As for trying different components. I've tried my RAM in individually and it still froze, I've tried a different GPU, I've tried a different PSU, I've even tried different operating systems. I'm left with the same conclusion you have re: cpu/motherboard hence why it's back with the chap I bought it from this morning. Will keep you posted.

Spoke too soon, its started freezing again and again it wont get past the splash screens in Crysis.

Before any mentions that it might be temperature related, if that was the case it should have worked the previous times I tried from a completely cool PC.

When I didn’t have my cooler properly attached, after being off for a day, my i7 would get to cut off temps (100 degrees) within less than 5 minutes of being on. Don’t underestimate the power of processors to heat up.

Well that would mean in my case it was heating up to cut off point in a matter of seconds, is that possible? the logs from my temp monitoring software see a +/-10 degree increase in a slow increment while the machine is starting, the rest of the time its stable at 40-45 degrees.

Sigh... new PSU and it's still giving me the same problem, isolating it to either the CPU or motherboard. I really don't think its temperature as in the space between a minute before the crash/restart and getting back into windows the temperature hasn't fluctuated more than 5 degrees, on the GPU its a steady figure as well.

Bummer fudzy. I recently made a new box and was having hassles and ended up being the ram. take the box to the shop where you bought your ram and ask them to try new sticks. I bought 2 * 2gb sticks of ddr 1066 new and one was bust...went to change at the shop and both their unwrapped sticks proved flakey and i had to wait till they got hold of more. did you get al the pieces from one shop?
brush the mb too or hoover it with brush attachment and in bios maybe do defaults and set ram to lowest speed possible and work up. Pull soundcard out and use onboard. get latest drivers too.

In all this, have you returned it to where you bought it? Or whomever built it for you?

I had an experience where I bought a PC via components with Digital Addiction. Something went wrong where I had to return the PC 2 or 3 times (can't remember). Component's can be that difficult to isolate.

The great thing with Digital Addiction (Etai) was how he took responsibility. I think we have an understanding of what caused the problems. But his handling of the whole process (me being pissed off my computer was not working, him dealing with me and the supplier) made me think DD is a place to buy from.

The whole point is that I did a scan and found no posts of you returning the computer.

Yeah its been back, twice. Last week, the day after I bought it, I took it back and we troubleshot that it wasn't the RAM or graphics card (by swapping them out). I then took it home to try see if installing Windows XP would sort the problem out. Then on Tuesday I bought a 4 to 8 way ATX power connector hoping that would sort the problem out, it didn't so I dropped it back with the guy early Wednesday morning. He then dropped it off with his suppliers who did some testing, they swapped out the PSU and told my guy that it was working. I'd really love to know how he came to this conclusion because when I got the system home it was doing the exact same thing. It will probably go back to him on Monday unless something happens over the weekend.

I am begining to think faulty main board.. as you have swapped out most of the components and its the last thing people who build new computer check and they dont want to swap out cause of the labour..

Lol you're telling me...

Did you drop your ram speed ie 266mhz and work up. The machine should handle any operating system? People testing things often wont run intensive apps/GAMES. they are just happy to see it boot up and stay on for a couple of minutes.

i had problems with my pc, almost the same, after i bought my quad a few years ago. i just manually set my rams voltage to 1.95 for ddr2. maybe google your ram model and find its recommended voltage and change that manually.
