Problems with new rig

Intersting post. I spent the good part of a day troubleshooting a new rig and in the end it was the RAM that was faulty, even though it read correct on the initial tests. I just hate this part of computers when it takes days to sort out, and no logic seems to exist as each person has their own set of tools to trouble shoot.

Tell me about it I still can't put 4gig ram into my system but I can ran with only 2gig in and it will run fine for day's(both modules) freezes/bsod/restarts/windows not installing. only thing that works with it is Linux ROFL but can't play the games I want on linux.

Could be the motherboard vs GFx compatibility..
been having the same kind of trouble with my MSI MObo and HD4850...
looked it up on the internet at nobody seems to be able to come up with a solutions

Memetested my ram to the max and I had no errors

I swapped it with another gfx card and still had the same issue. Going to recheck the thermal paste this evening though, on boot the temperature is quite high (mid 60s) but then it normalizes to 40-50

Does it crash mostly under CPU load or GPU loads, I ran prime95 benchmarks fine but in GPU test, particularly Furmark stabilty test the PC just restarts after a while.

Ordered a new PSU, hope it fixes it.

A mix of both, it will freeze erratically if i'm just using the system but most consistently as crysis warhead loads up.

This evening I re-applied the thermal paste and tried the power supply out of my old PC (Antec NeoPower 430W) unfortunately it still having the same problems.

as a long shot try restoring the BIOS to defaults

Done that :(

I'm left wondering if its not the RAM maybe. I have 2 x 2GB, I ran both individually and it froze up, what are the odds that both sticks are incompatible and thus giving me the same result? That list which was posted earlier though is not exclusive from what I can make out, its just what has been tested with the board.

I'm sorry to say this but I have found the average ram diagnostic utilities to be useless as I had RAM problems before that no other utility but Micro-Scope Diagnostic Suite identified with faulty ram.

$250!

looks good.. but it probally cheaper to just buy more RAM :)

Okay, doing a bit more research on the RAM shows that the Transcend kit on the approved MSI list is the same as my RAM, just another name. I've got both datasheets and they're identical. Sigh, running out of options here :(

Another bump. Was reading about the PSU and rememebred that I'm using a 4pin 12V ATX cable in the 8pin 24V socket. I was told it would work but looking at some pages it seems this can be the cause of problems, now I just need to source a molex to 8pin connector which is proving to be quite tricky.

I seem to have sorted the problem out, bought an 4 to 8 power connector, plugged that in and now Crysis gets past the 3rd splash screen, even got to play a bit too. Now to hook my rig back up to my big screen

lol... well done :P

Spoke too soon, its started freezing again and again it wont get past the splash screens in Crysis.

Before any mentions that it might be temperature related, if that was the case it should have worked the previous times I tried from a completely cool PC.

Have you tried disabling the sound on the game? Still can't rule out overheating, a processor gets very hot very quick, and then cools down just as quick.

If you don't believe me try remove the heatsink from your CPU, press your thumb against the processor and start your PC :D

Also can you please run download and run the file below. Run it in a window and monitor the CPU/GPU temps while it stresses the GPU?

I am no pro so if this makes no sense, then ignore it , but you said you think its a sound problem. I think u can disable sound cards in the bios and try running the machine without sound... could b a faulty board.
