Programs won't start, Not Even Task Manger

Tpex- TURN OFF ZONEALARAM! And try again.

MadMailMan's solution is of course the best, but alas not a quick-fix.

Install Winpatrol and use it to disable startup programs ........

oh my word. come on you dont need a utility to edit start up files? they're in RUN in the registry, or RUNONCE or RUNONCEX and in "Startup" on your programs folder.

lol u now gonna install another applet with more rubbish to fix the problem :)

now that you mention zone-alarm, have you tried disabling it completely? Not just allow IT to allow anything - actually NUKE it. Remove it from RUN so it doesnt even start with windows and see if things settle. I've had other problems with ZA before.

I can't do that  my modem has no firewall, you should see how meny attacks I get a day

Upgrade to Linux. :p

Hellno! :D

:o Well I didn't actually know what the registry address was.... and msconfig is a program that comes with windows, you start it like regedit

I have with AVG and threatfire, But if it was spyware wouldn't do it all the time? I think It only happens to me 1 to 2 times a day

Not necessarily, Spyware does strange things.... I would run Spybot just to be sure.

no i was referring to.. nevermind :)

I still think its ZoneAlarm imho. why not turn on windows firewall then and disable ZA and try? Since SP2 windows firewall is very robust and pretty locked-down by default.

Attacks in a day? Lol i think ZoneAlarm just says that to make you think its working. I've never liked that program :)

Try download and run Autoruns from sysinternals: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx. It has way more startup entries than those listed in the registry locations above, and more than MSCONFIG.

Ok would you suggest another firewall? The only thing I trust windows to run is my computer, nothing else

and how big is malwarebytes? I'm not keen on spybot SD, I've used it before

yeah problem is installing two firewalls could make it really worse :)

i cant think of anything as "easy" as ZoneAlarm. Maybe try get Comodo. Just remember its a bit different. Zonealarm attaches its rules to applications - which in my mind is silly, but yes makes it easy to configure. Other firewalls maintain single rulesets which apply to everything. I think Comodo is like that i cant remember.

Either way Comodo is free too, (it will download AV+FW but at install u can choose to only install FW). Remember to remove ZoneAlarm first.

Ok If I understand correctly, then if I block itunes for example then cod4 won't be able to connect to the net?

The dead internet connection sounds like a corrupt winsock32.dll file, as for the applications refusing to start... do these applications require internet?

would it uncorrupt when I restart? and no, not all of them

tpex : its rule based. if you allow outgoing connections on port 22, anything wanting to out on 22 will. If you allow incoming connections on port xyz, anything listening on xyz can receive and incoming connection.

Oculate, yes, and im sure Zonealarm broke it :)

oh ok,all that complicated networking shyte :( ok thanks rura, I'll give it a try

start -> run 'sfc /scannow' (without the '') will replace all .dll files on your system (requires admin rights and a windows disc) if it truely is a .dll file corruption

I'm not so sure...

I've had this problem on work machines over the past 5-8 months, the problem tends to disappear after a couple months  and we don't have ZA at work

ZA does seem like the most obvious app to blame though, due to its 'interactions' with Windows

Ok did a scan with malwarebytes and it found a trojan in the software that starts up with my modem
