Projector Screen Alternatives?

You then need multiple fixture points to combat that problem i reckon...

I tightened mine rock solid - and it still drops slowly over a day or two because of my systems low bass level and vibrations :(

Sounds to me like the leaver which adjusts the tilt may not be tight enough. It should either be in the upright position or down. If its in the centre it loosens it. Make sure its tight. You should not even be able to move your projector if its tight.

Yeh... tight as it will go... I'll take it off and see if I can't pad it with something.

Yesterday I finally got round to assembling the frame - the screen itself will be 2.70m x 1.52m (diagonal 3.1m) - I've added 11cm on the four sides of the frame for black border tape*. Giving me a frame dimension of 2.92m x 1.74m. I'll post a picture of the frame later today.

I still have to figure out how to mount the frame so its easily removable - and attach the screen material - hopefully by next weekend I'll be done with watching movies on an oak coloured wall.

* This exact same border tape is available on Bidorbuy for R695 (excl shipping) - eBay was R326 (incl shipping)

Looking forward to this - although I'm a bit concerned about attaching the screen material - as I've read its quite difficult getting it done properly - and also - dirt could be a problem with the frame on the floor.

What about a wooden frame rather than border tape?

French Cleats? http://www.hometheatershack.com/for...read-data-detailed-information.html#post28511

I'm using material as the screen - so it wraps around the wooden frame and is stapled to the back.

Also - I think the black tape also serves to illuminate/reduce any light bleeding on the edges.

Thanks - I'll look into that. I don't think the screen is going to weigh more than 10kg.

I see. I suspect also that a wooden frame might be reflective if the picture falls outside the size of the frame.

Well otherwise it's just good old picture frame wire and some screws/brackets.

Yeh - thinking of just putting screws in the wall and hanging the frame off of them --- just don't want it falling and damaging the screen - or my speakers/subs.

In that case the French Cleat might be worth it...

do you know if they're available here? (haven't seen them in Builders Warehouse)

Here's the frame

Nice. Have you got one with the cloth over it as well?

What did all the parts set you back in cost and time?

Haven't done the cloth yet - its on my to-do list for this week.... I first want to decide on how I'm going to mount it before putting the cloth on (don't want to risk damaging it, as its high end and expensive to replace).

The actual frame was cheap - think it was around this:
* 2x 3m planks @ R35 each = R70
* 3x 2m planks @ R27.50 each = R55
* 1.5m x 1.5m board @ R60 = R60
* 92 screws @ R60 a bag = R60

R245 for the frame.

I'm sure mounting it won't be more than R100

Then R330 for the black tape.

Screen material (depending on what you use) can be anything from R240 (3m of blackout curtain) to thousands

So you can build a professional looking screen for around R1,000, with the black tape being the most expensive - still not sure if its worth it, but I'll report back when it gets here - might just be the same as black velvet material.

Wow, you put a lot of effort into that. Would it not have been easier to get a screen from Parrot or similar?

I got my screen from Mirrodex about four years ago and it works like a charm. They used to be in Wynberg (Sandton). I'm not sure if they are still around.

Most screens of a decent size are R3000+.

The material I'm using would probably put the screen purchase price over R10,000.

One day if I have money - I want to get a decent motorized screen, but that'll set me back R17,000+

Couldn't find the french cleats - but found something they use on mirrors, its basically a screw into the wall and a hanger on the back of the frame - I've had to modify it slightly. The sales guy said it'll hold 70kg - I'm skeptical

I'm going to put two on the top and two at the bottom for support... hold thumbs - the plan is to do it tonight.

Cool. Post some pics.
