precisely! i want her to explore the manual settings that you get via FV-5, to see if she finds them useful... or if she finds them too much. If it's the later, she's sticking to her cellphone.

Image quality will be vastly different, you're comparing a crappy five element lens made as cheaply as possible to a decent piece of glass, a tiny 1/2.6" sensor to a decent APS-C sensor, a fixed focal length with digital zoom only to sensor length varying from covering a zoom range of over 200x optical zoom, the ability to learn manual operation one step at a time (if you throw her straight into full manual she'll probably walk away), the ability to do long exposures (yes, even in auto), the use of ND and polarizing filters, even the crappy built in flash on a DSLR is MUCH better than the thing in a phone... The list goes on.

Better answer this. Still don't think she is ready yet. I need to spend some more time with her to see what her specific interests are, and what she wants to do. All I got so far was:

"People & Nature"

Auto is not "Auto" on a DSLR, trust me on this :D

That's broad enough. You know the saying, jack of all trades, master of none. Even if she just said "People" it would be an acceptable answer (then again, even that is pretty broad as it covers everything from portraits in the studio to street photography).

I can show you pictures taken by people using full auto that are better than most people can manage with manual. Also would you rather get a decent picture taken in full auto or missed in manual cause you were still getting the settings right?
 
I taught myself photography through experimentation.

When I was younger I could not even afford a digital camera... I used a video camera from salvage to get the basic jist and used a PC capture card to play around.

Years later, all I could afford was a crappy Samsung point-and-shoot, but yes, I pushed that thing. It had a fixed lens but that didn't stop me strapping a magnifying glass to the front to do macro shots.

10 years later I only got around to the DSLR i.e. affording one, and I can use it effectively.
The professional photographer was ruining my son's school concert with his flippen flash... I just remained cool, and used my skills, and didn't use any flash, and got some awesome photos, that actually look NATURAL too...

Fanie, it is not all about the body and controls associated with it. The glass has a lot to do with it too. These things you will not get from walking around with a phone.

Not sure where you are from, but if nearby, I will let your daughter have my camera and lens for a weekend. You just provide the opportunity for her.
 
Glass is everything.. that is why I put my money down on glass... Camera body is a painful second or third...
Hence in my post I strapped lenses onto those ancient point and shoot cameras...

And of course I understand that any camera in auto will produce better quality photos than any phone will in auto.

But my question is... i don't even know what the question is anymore. I think she needs to read a book, maybe the one AT suggested. (I will as well). And let's take it from there. I need her to tell me what her plans are wrt photography. If I buy her a 6k camera and 6k lense, so she can take better selfies (people), outside (natura), I will literally schit my pants.

Let me see if I can get some pics from her facebook or something, and you guys can tell me if yes, or if no.
 
Glass and camera carry equal weight as far as I'm concerned - I can usually tell what body I was using on a particular lens at a glance. Problem with older bodies, aside from having to replace the shutter and/or mirror box, is they can't hold a candle to today's technology.
