Proper Camera for Daughter (turning 15)

Hmmm, and how much would a semi decent lens be? I know less about lenses than I do about cameras.

PS: I know foggol about cameras.

Work on about R5k... get a low cost body, 2nd hand, such as the EOS 1000D

I will take you up on that offer, I urgently need a reliable backup body before I go on holiday. I don't have time to phone right now, but if you can confirm that both come with a battery and charger I'll do the deal with you.

Assuming faniedry doesn't want it, of course.

Any beginner camera bag needs this fixed focal lens. I have one myself.

But rather look here. Standup guys:

At something like this:

Cheap body and expensive glass. You will not sell that lens in your/her life. It is that good. But it is on the high price side.

I would look around for a 18-200mm Canon lens to go with that for around R4k, but then you can just as well buy this:

I have messaged the person, but lets first see what Fanie says. I was not looking for another camera, but that is worth it.:D Even for his purposes, the last link is also a bargain.

To put the value of a 20D in perspective, they were selling for $1880 back in 2005.

Well then faniedry please add some lube and make it quick :D:D The second link doesn't interest me personally, as I don't need anything there (although the battery grip for the 20D would be nice, but I'll pick one up on Ebay - I got one for my 600D for under R200 including postage and for under R600 for my 5DMk2).

I think you guys can take that deal.

In all honestly I'm afraid that this interest is only going to be a fad. I want to first see if shows real interest to learn.

I'll download Camera FV-5 to her cellphone, and let her walk through some tutorials about what all those manual settings mean. Let's see if she finds in use in it, and let's see what she come up with. I'll take it from there.

I appreciate all the feedback in any case. Almost got me in photography ;)

OK. Those two bodies are still available. Comes with chargers and a battery each, but batteries are not good anymore. Does not last long.

I'm in Botswana, so no ways I can get there before next weekend. Maybe you and Fanie should go in on that one, if he is keen. Myself, I would also be keen to get my hands on another. Lemme know where we're at? Logistically I cant do anything from here.

No, no, no - you'll scare her away

FIRST love taking photos
THEN learn how to do all the schmancy stuff

What is the 20D battery grip going for? I would take it

Yup well they always have a few of those at Kameraz... so if someone buys the bundle deal in this thread, and doesn't want the battery grip, please let me know.

fanie are you near to him? Even with batteries that aren't 100s it's still a good deal. I'm in Ape Town so I can't do anything :(

think i'm going to pass on that deal for now... i'll probably regret it later.

+100000000000000000000000000000

Even with the DSLR, let her first do everything in Auto.

So what's the difference between having a 6k camera taking auto foto's and a 2k cellphone taking auto foto's?

boggerol. she needs to first learn about the fine tuning art of taking fotos. see if she is still interested after learning the skill. and then try it with a proper camera.
