So I just signed up with Propertiere's Basic Uncapped ADSL for 384kbps at R158/month.

It was a decision between them and BuzyBuy but chose them because they offer 2 concurrent connections (so that my folks can connect to it in the event that they get capped near the end of the month and buying more cap isn't really justifiable).

IIRC Propertiere are an IS bandwidth reseller, much like Afrihost, Axxess, Openweb, etc.

I was skeptical in signing up with them because they are relatively unknown of in this forum but figured that it's only for a month, so if I find it's not working out, I can always change.... :D

They were pretty quick in signing me up... Signed up via their website online, did an EFT, emailed proof of payment and they sent me my ADSL login details within an hour, which IMHO is not bad for a public holiday, after hours :)

So lets see how it goes...

Will run some speed tests via the MyBroadband SpeedTest later, as am downloading now...

It's not the speed tests you need to worry about. It's the inevitable throttling after a few gigs.

I assume it uses the IS backbone?

Well, I mean you're actually USING them now. When you do a Speedtest (or a tracert, if you prefer :p), does it confirm that it's via IS' backbone?

Don't know what to look for in the tracert but here it is:

Tracert:
Code:
tracert google.co.za

Tracing route to google.co.za [196.23.168.147]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms BEZEQ [192.168.1.1]
  2 138 ms 172 ms 215 ms dsl-243-68-01.telkomadsl.co.za [41.243.68.1]
  3 899 ms 1007 ms 1073 ms 196.38.73.113
  4 671 ms 1002 ms 1077 ms cdsl2-rba-vl150.ip.isnet.net [196.38.73.9]

Trace complete.

Well, isnet.net confirms it. I'm guessing you're probably on the Lite package (if memory serves that's the one where the top 20% get shaped/throttled).

OpenWeb elaborates quite nicely on the FUP:
* Fair Usage Policy:
Users are divided into two groups. 80% and 20%. 80% of the user base will always experience full speed access, with no shaping. 20% of the user base will be shaped. The fair usage policy on our Lite accounts is dynamic. Low to mid range users will always experience unshaped, superior access.

Edit: I see that they basically said the same thing on Propertiere's site :p It's R50-odd cheaper there too, so it seems like a fair deal.

OpenWeb elaborates quite nicely on the FUP:

On their website:
The service is offered in speeds of 384, 512, 1024 and 4096 Kbps. The service allows two simultaneous connections. If used concurrently, the Peak Information Rate (PIR) will be halved between the two connections.
The usage is monitored on a rolling 10 day period and does not reset at the beginning of each month. All service options are Unshaped. Should usage remain less than 80% of the average user for each product, the service will remain unaffected.

However should individual usage exceed 80% of the average user for each product, then the first level of moderation will be implemented, moving the service to a Shaped service. Shaping or moderation is implemented via download throttling and user relative priority control will first be applied to all file sharing protocols. Should usage remain above the 80% average threshold, additional shaping will be managed via manipulation of throttling and priority control. The 4096 Lite is managed at 50% of the average and is designed for light users who still require high speed access to the internet.

Jeez... That's a helluva ping but otherwise pretty normal.

You should ideally get around 0.35Mb/s but meh.

Do you have any other accounts to compare to?

Know how I can set my D-Link DSL-2760U to allow PPPOE connections so I can just dial an additional connection from my pc instead of setting the whole account up in the router?
