Superfluous? From what I understand these solar water heaters are intended to preheat the water before it enters the conventional heaters thereby greatly reducing the amount of electricity required.

Again, by the time they get to the geysers they are cold. Long pipes, remember.
And the circulation thing is already proven to be a difficult thing, as the solar geysers will empty.

So, no, I do not yet buy the explanation.
 
I'm not too worried about those regulations. There is just no way that is going to go through in that form. Either that or there is a mistake. Think about the following scenario:

Huge company has annual revenue of 20 billion. Off that they could perhaps make 5 billion profit if its a fairly profitable business. Then they "contravene their licensing conditions" and get fined 10% of turnover (2 billion) per day.
Day 1: For investors all real return for that year is gone
Day 2: Investors are effectively making a loss (TVM, inflation etc)
Day 3: Investors are ready to burn something down

If its implemented in the proposed way and actually enforced then the country will be in anarchy within a week.

But I think its all a mistake because that clause was gazetted in 2006 along with spelling misTakez and everything.

Ok - lets ignore that hotels using solar water heating is not a new thing and you can help me to understand why the water going from the solar heater to the geyser will chill to such an extent that it will be useless.

Because, as I said in the first post on this point, the water will cool down in the pipes - in the same way it does in a house where the pipes are far from the geyser.

Just as the hot water eventually makes its way from the geyser to the tap it will do likewise on the way to the heater.

That's even assuming that the hotels hot water system isnt gravity fed (much like the one found in most homes).
 
I have some form of solution that I can agree with.

Solar geysers - water flows constantly through the "system" (including the pipes). This way the pipes stay hot, and the water is continuously reheated.

Within this system is a thermostat that monitors water temp. Should it get low (say under 50 degrees), a relay trips and water is fed to the electric geysers. Their cold water enters the solar system.

The geysers in occupied rooms and "standby rooms" power on, and heat the water to 55 and keep it there.

As soon as the solar water is hot again (over 80 or 90 - I believe they get really hot), the reverse happens. Geysers go "offline" water and power wise, and solar water circulates again. Any hot water from geysers enters the solar system.

Best of both worlds, no cold water, and the electric geysers get "pre heated" water.


EDIT: This would need some modifications for residential "high rises", as all homes would need to share the remaining hot water in the system. Should be doable.
