Protecting Your Car From Hail

What solutions are available for us in SA for protecting the car from hail, more specifically when the car is not in motion and there is no access to covered parking?
I'm assuming there's not much you can do if you are driving.

The covers that I've seen around seem way too thin to prevent physical damage to the car.

So it seems there may be a market for car covers with thick padding, a waterproof outer material and a soft inner.

This is true, I think. Those "raincoat" material car covers never fit perfectly and when they move (by being blown by the wind), it scratches your car.

Seriously though, If you really loved your car wouldn't you get something like this custom made with the best materials?

It would also apply to cars in garages left there for more than a few days.

The reason I asked for solutions from SA is because we have our own raw materials that can be used for such a product, thereby reducing the price by quite a margin, not to mention shipping costs. :erm:

Well I assume it would be pretty simple to even DIY yourself:

(1) Take existing waterproof car cover;
(2) Stitch rubber material between outer cover and inner cloth (see (3) below);
(3) Stitch scratch-proof cloth on the inside;
(4) Profit;
(5) Win.

The added weight should help with the problem of the wind blowing away the covers as well.

Not sure about the end weight, but it is only really the protective rubber insulation which would add weight. The outer cover and cloth weight would be negligible.

Then again, on the assumption that the product would be marketed here in SA - the rubber layer needed be too thick because we don't have severe hail very often. But the weight of the rubber depends on the type used. Hmmm I may have a rubber contact...

Unfortunately not. It shouldn't be too hard to find somebody to do the stitching I guess.

Weight and packaged size are also very important things to consider.

Considering the materials, the machine might have to be industrial strength.
