Protecting Your Car From Hail

Will try enquire with our IP department about how one goes about such a process.
 
We heard the hail approaching and I quickly grabbed a very thick and fluffy blanket to put over my friends car. Short story, it didnt help at all. I highly doubt that any blanket as mentioned above here, will help. Nothing you can do if cricket size hail stones hit your car. Even my zink roof had dents in them....

Those foam mattresses used for camping. One on the bonnet, another on the roof. Problem is you can't easily protect the sides of it's coming in at an angle and you have space on either side of the car for hail to come through. You could always tie them on, but you're looking for a quick solution. I suppose the foam mattresses would also need to be tied on or they'd just be pushed off...
 
A car cover with 5-6mm EPE foam liner followed by a soft inner layer should do the job. All you wanna do is the disperse the impact energy of the hail. If that is not enough then a outer corrugate or compartmentalise air 'mattress' you quicly inflate with a co2 cannister will definitely do the job.

I'm thinking if the first part is not enough then we can take it further with a inflatable air barrier on the outside or even the inside. Almost like a lilo(?) thingy you use in a pool but just from a much more durable material. The EPE foam would be cut in segments so the whole thing folds away into a carry bag easily and when you inflate it (if that part is even required) then it will automatically assume the shape of a car.

EDIT: On second though it would be better to have the air barrier in the inside then you can make it from a lighter material seeing on the outside hail could potentially cut the material. So thin foam on the outside with air barrier on the inside followed by a soft material easy on your paint job.

Maybe I should patent this, just without rounded corners :D

Take an exisiting cover and stitch in another layer with an air pocket, similar to a blow up matress.

Easy to transport (air pocket empty) and the pressure in the air pocket (filled) should bounce off any hail stones big enough to damage the car.

If you use this, I expect royalties :)
