So I decided to pull my ooooold First-gen ps2 out the cupboard. It was put there in the first place because it can't read ANYTHING .."Disc read error" , No Cd-rom ,dvd or any game. I took it to The Games Dungeon here in LHP to chip it and the guy said "my lens is too weak to read copied games" ? and said I cant get a new one because they don't make them anymore for the Bulky first gen ps2s.

What now? Do I discard it?

I had the same issue with my first gen ps2 years ago! Had mine chipped and after 3 months my lens died. Took it back to the guy that modded it and he said the lens is out and needs to be replaced. R1000 later it worked again. Should be much cheaper to replace that lens now. Apparently on the older ps2's chipping puts extra strain on the lens, or they are just weak in general.

@labratza I stay in Bloem dude. So no luck.

at Blaaislaai. R1000 haha really loved your Ps hey! . Yep they weak in general I hear. Anyway Thanks man, but they guy told me those lenses aren't available anymore:(

dam ok then lol think you need to make a trip to jozi to sort it out. still wanne get mine chipped cos there is a few games that I love playing on there

You can still get the lens. I replaced a 400C the other day. DO you know what your laser model number is?

The lenses for the fattie go for around R500 and the lenses for the new ones R300 (give or take)

Sony stopped making the laser for the original PS2 years ago. You get knock-offs, but I found them be even poorer quality than the genuine Sony part, something I didn't think was possible. But why not get it chipped, get hold of the network adapter and put a hard drive in there?

True that.

Its very unlikely that he will find a laser replacement for the first generation PS2.
Since the Ps2 slim was first released it became harder for me to even find spare for the original PS2.

The harddrive is a great idea, and if he is a purist,
Ponder has solid advice with Ebay.;)

I saw some there!
