PS2 Repairs

Try disabling the chip if you have one it might work. Otherwise it might be your ps2's laser giving some problems i reckon. It might need to be re-calibrated.

It's 10 to 1 a Messaigh (???), Magic 5 or Infinity chip....get some local ps2 shop to remove it :D ...that will solve your problem...and if you want to watch imported dvds ...or play NTSC games...well..order a Xplosiv boot disk..
try www.kalahari.net ;)

That is correct it is a Messaigh I am certian of it. I think there werre two types and this was the upgraded one.

The problem down here is I can't find anyone that will do it.

Thanks again

You can't compare it to a car unless you illegally modified the car.
How do you compare legally modifying a piece of hardware a person owns with illegally modifying a car?

You should be taking it to Sony, but wait you can't because you illegally modified it. See the point?
Not really. I thought Ster Kinekor were the agents?

It also might help to tell us where in South Africa you are? It's a big place and all we have is that you are no longer in CT.
He did say Midrand right at the beginning of the thread.

Nthdimension, very analytical would suggest you are an accountant rather than a gamer.;)

I was aware of the points, but did not want to raise any eye brows. I just want to repair the PS2.

I am by the way lol.

I left Gauteng a while ago because there weren't enough criminals so unfortunately I'm not sure where you can go these days to get a backdoor electronics repair. However modified or not, from what I've seen, I'd never entrust a PS2 to the official agents.

The only reason it has been chipped is to play pirated games, so I can promise you he is doing something illegal.... How do you illegally modify a car that you own? You mess with the chip on a BMW your warranty is void. Same as a PS2.

SK might be the agents but Sony is still responsible in the end for a faulty product. If you did not void the warranty.

My bad, I didn't see that....

IF you want to repair it go to bruma /eastrand/bright water commons fleamarket you'll find guys there that deal with consoles I wont tell you exactly where as thats your job, and fixing it will probably cost you R400-700, does it play dvd games ? if it does and you say you have a dvd player than just let it go, ps2 has a crap dvd player anyways, I also have a messiah chip, you can try the following

1. Open the the tray using the eject button
2. Hold reset until the tray goes back in
3. Press reset to start the console

or

1. Start the console with no disc
2. Go to the browser
3. Press eject and insert the dvd, and if the disc icon comes up press x

or

1. Open the tray with the eject button
2. Switch of you console using the switch at the back which will leave the tray open
3. Switch the console on again using the switch at the back
4. Hold reset, which should turn the console on and the disc tray will go in (this method is used for playing ps1 games also)

When did they make it illegal to void a warranty?

Since chipping a console has substantial legal uses, especially in a country where we're paying some of the highest PS2 game prices in the world, there is a valid reason for them to exist. When people can buy their games and movies from anywhere, and run independent software on their consoles if they choose, then there won't be any reason to use a modchip to fix an anti-competitive defect in the original hardware. I don't care if some or even most people use modchips to play copied games. If one person on the entire planet uses one to import games from a cheaper source, thereby enforcing their right to competitive prices, then modchips have a valid reason to exist. I find it funny that everyone whines about Telkom using their monopoly position to rip off the consumer, but are more than happy to support Ster Kinekor doing exactly the same thing.

Most people I know in Europe use modified PS2s and GameCubes both because NTSC games are much cheaper and because they invariably come out anything up to a year before the PAL version.

It still goes to local Ster Kinekor clowns for repair. Sony have no involvement other than possibly covering the cost of parts and labour. The average blind man with an arc welder would demonstrate more skill at repairing electronics than the butchers at Ster Kinekor. I'd hesitate to send a PS2 to them if it was under warranty, and if it were not I'd strongly recommend against them.

hi there can someone tell me if i can use my dvd players laser for my ps2??
