PS3 as a media system

Before the mods notice, I'd love him to answer this ...

This is a small sample of him repeating the same thing, and me asking for an answer. I can't be bothered to go through every single post of his :

Who said it didn't work? Just offered nothing WOW like you tend to think. I have every function (better) - barring the Blu Ray player.

and you came jumping on me because in 8 months you couldnt get it to work

HTW do you see I didn't make it work? What is make it work anyway?

as you could not get your "100K" equipment working with the sony PS3 in 8 months.

as you could not get the PS3 to work on your 100K HT system in 8 (yes eight) months

And - you've mentioned about 10x that 'Dolby couldn't get his PS3 to work' ... wtf does that mean anyway? What did I do or not do?

Please explain how it didn't work correctly in my system? You've said it 10x - and I do not understand you.
And for the 10th time, how did my PS3 not work? Was it faulty or something?

And you were expecting a direct answer devoid of insults? You do know who you were questioning, right?

Thats pretty cool, im assuming those mkv's are on your HDD, did you have to enter all that info yourself or was it imbedded in the file, or does a program do it for you?

There's a program tha does it - it checks the file name/directory and fetches whatever info it can. It get's the correct info in 95% of the cases (I've tried with about 600 movies)

You can also select where to get it from about 10 different site. The more sites you tell it to look, the longer it takes and more bandwidth it uses - but the more accurate it is.

I've got it sent on 4 sites and it takes roughly 3MB a movie to find the data and about 3 minutes a movie :/ I just select a batch and leave it running

Such as imbd.

It did not say "DOLBY's 130K HT sytem V the PS3". ?

you are compelled to compare it with you BluRay less personal HT system.

I apologised earlier - I thought when you said at any price, you really did mean at any price. I mean the mede8tor is what - R2,500? It takes out the PS3 media side with ease.

Perhaps you shoul have rephrased and said something like 'the PS3 is the best media player under R1500.00' or 'it's a decent media player add on'

It's be like someone with a 40" Sony Bravia telling me they have the best TV at any price, ever - and they have the best car at any price, ever. You can expect people to query and say, 'um - but this is better at a few Rand more'

That's what I always say about absolutes in an argument you can't back up - don't use them!

Even be a bit more vague about it: "The PS3 is the best media player in it's price ranges" might fly - though not past me :D

We all know what the PS3 is capable of in terms of media...and it's obvious that the anti-camp will use every cheap trick in the book to discredit it...c'mon dolby, I'm no media fundi, but we all now you cannot compare an all-in-one system with any high-end dedicated component...if we talking about mobile devices, consoles, media centre's...

It was not just reasonable but logical that you compare in the price range (and availabity) with some reference to all-round features of devices you comparing...

IAP is right (hence your apology which I'm sure he'll accept) and you guys know it...it would be ridiculous to quote all the media features of the PS3 again, it's been fleshed out of the last 3 years...so i won't, you know that no other console matches it...

I think you're missing the point

the PS3 for the extra's in media centre it gives/brings (AT ANY PRICE)

He claims it's the best at any price - surely I'm entitled to correct him and say it isn't? Had he left that out - this thread probably wouldn't be here.

I know the PS3 is basic compared to real media streamer. It lacks certain codecs, containers, search functions, GUIs and other features. Many PS3 users disagree and seem to think a it can compare. Look how arrogrant the comment above is! At any price? What a joke ...

Keep in mind I compared it to a R2,500 media system (I pointed out it was a mede8ter) - not a high end component. In fact probably one of the cheapest dedicated.

so i won't, you know that no other console matches it...
No other console, eh? Out of ... two? Or are there a few others I don't know of? :/

Lemon - all I'm trying point out is that PS3 is just about equal with an Xbox360 with gaming (some poorer games, some better games).

When it comes to BR, it'll do. It's not fantastic - but it's an alright machine right now. Almost an interim solution until you buy a dedicated.

When it comes to media, well, in my eyes it fails. As pointed out, it lacks features of dedicated machines.

All would be great if the PS3 camp actually said, 'look - we agree with you' ... but they don't.They all seem to think they have THE best device on the planet that can out do any dedicated piece of equipment out, at any price.

In a nutshell, Jack of all trades and master of none.

If so wished, you could add an Xbox 360 Elite 120GB (Jasper) at R3,400.00 and the Sony S360 BR player at R2,500.00.

You're then paying slightly higher than some of the initial PS3ers did, but getting a much better, dediciated media system, a BR player with better clarity (and no BR laser failures) and a gaming machine which pretty much rivals the PS3.

How is THAT for a deal ;)

@Dolby :

I do agree...if that was IAP's stance and he mentioned the best at any price (intended or unintended) then you are 100% correct to not only correct him but substantiate it with the examples you have..

I also 100% agree on your comment about 360 and PS3 matched in terms of games...the 360 'pc' architecture and superiority in the graphics components (including memory and memory access) gives it a opportunity to challenge the PS3, especially but not exclusively on multi-platform games...

The PS3's unique architecture doesn't only lend itself to unparallel'd power but to complexities that result in (at the moment) technical achievements that not only question the console itself but it's 'claimed' future possibilities...

It is unquestionable that 2009 has delivered some spectacular games from a technical perspective on the PS3 platform, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and talk of games that will continue to push the boundaries like Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Heavy Rain, God of War 3 and most anticipated Uncharted 3...

I also agree with your 'jack of all trades' comment, but it's not just a 'jack', it performs quite admirably in all facets...media playback, blu-ray playback, gaming console and internet portal...

(I haven't agreed because you said it would be nice to, i agreed because what you said makes sense and i've shared my opinion where i have disagreed...btw, i've said at least 20 posts ago that I am impressed by the 360 and MS's effort in only their 2nd generation product for console gaming, but i do believe the PS3 is a better product and I totally disagree with MS launching the Arcade for any reason other than gaining market share)

Sold! Now, if I only had some cash :/

Brad was the saleperson at the AVA show yesterday ;)

u get anything from the expo dolby?
they had the mede8er for 2k at the show yesterday

I have a TViX already, which seems to do everything the mede8ter does :/ Otherwise I would have gone for it.

Also bought a HDTV a few weeks ago - so couldn't get anything TV wise. I was - however - very close to getting a new Marantz receiver/BR player ... but logic took over and I realised it was too expensive right now ; I'll rather wait.
