Wash, rinse, repeat ... been there done that.
However, look at the average Joe that buys a Xbox 360 My first next-gen purchase 2 years back.
Owned 400 DVD titles (yes been collecting since 1999) now 600+. Had a standard TV (bought HDTV a year ago). Price of PS3 R5000+, price of Xbox R3000+ ... I plumped for a Xbox 360.
FAIL. If 'average' Joe got 500 dvd's at a conservative 'average' of R150 a dvd, then he invested R75 000....an HDTV a year ago at a conversative 'average' of R8000 then he has spent R83 000 at least in his media titles and hardware...It's obvious that 'average' Joe would not be alienated from a PS3 purchase because of R2 000 price difference. If 'average' joe intended watching those DVD's, the PS3 is a great upscaler, it has blu-ray when he intends purchasing blu-ray(so he can fully enjoy the 1080p on his more expensive HD tv) and obviously for it's media streaming and playback. I'm a below average joe (described above) and bought a PS3 for media and dvd playback.
I now own a PS3 but not one BR movie because replacing my DVD collection with BR would be bordering on the insane. It has streaming and all that but I simply put files I want to watch on my TV on USB flash drive or watch off an external HDD ... which can be done on the Xbox 360.
FAIL. (tough one to fail, cos you said it was insane, but in context...it's a fail)
If you have anything close to 100 DVD's, it is insane to consider replacing it with blu-ray, it's unlikely you'll even find half the collection on blu-ray, blu-ray is there to complement an existing dvd collection, not replace it.
My classics like Natural Born Killers, Exorcist, Training Day, Usual Suspects, Friday, Empire REcords, Dazed and Confuzed will not be replaced, but movies like 2012, Avatar, transformers i'll definitely get on blu-ray...
Blah blah blah, console war, Xbox 360 vs PS3, Wii sales vs Sony/Microsoft ... at the end of the day the price point of the PS3 now is within many peoples reach ... very late into the next-gen cycle.
FAIL : How is it late when the Wii's next gen console will only feature some of the PS3's current features and the x-box might not even include a high-capacity disc format iin it's next iteration...it's 3 year's in, and Sony has shown that every generation is pretty long with both the PS1 and PS2 getting support into 10 years (PS2 currently in their 9th).
On the price point...heard of, technology leader -> high component costs -> high production costs -> early adoptors -> branding -> lower component costs and production -> revised model -> mass market -> FTW ! <seen twice with sony with their console already> Should read up on the previous 2 generations....
But, if you want to play all the great titles -- it's being a fanboi only owning one console. Hardcore gaming dictates that a Xbox 360 and PS3 must be in your living/TV room. Plain and simple!
FAIL !I've owned the wii with wiiplay, wii-fit and some decent games (namely 2, Mario galaxy and Zelda) and sold it because it had no value...I got a gaming pc, played Fable, Halo, Gears, L4D and Mass Effect and can honestly say none warrant the selection of 360 or PS3....so I only own 1 console, play about 4-5 games a month...I buy on average 3 games a month, hire 2...and trade a few....play also on my portable and attend lans on average twice a month....u get *real* hardcore gamers that only own 1 console and you get fanboi's that own all 3 and blinded somehow by the features of 1...(paying R500 a year for online isn't attractive to me).
So yes ... once again all the soldiers from 'both' camps will mention BR, RROD, exclusives being better on 360 -- exclusives being better on the PS3, 2009/10 being the comeback of the PS3 ... yadda yadda yadda ... but its stupid
and that is my final say on the matter.
FAIL. It's stupid now that you got a PS3, but many people still have decide which console to purchase, to sell their other for a PS3 or complement their current gaming set up with a PS3 and those factors are HUGE. Wonder why u chose to buy a PS3 after your 360 if it wasn't for the BR, better exclusives, media centric features that you mentioned.
Buy what you can afford or the features you need and don't crucify others for the choice they made ...
FAIL. Or save and buy something that has longevity, feature-rich, great quality and superb exclusives...Won't crucify anyone for buying a PS2, Wii, 360 or any other console, but will take them to task if they suggest the PS3 hasn't got the most value, features and quality.
