PS3 launch date ??

Syndyre : would you be shocked to learn that conservative estimates put the loss per console at ROUGHLY $200..... and they're not expecting costs to come down anywhere nearly as quickly because of the complexity of the system... and they're contemplating a price drop early and increasing the loss per console.

Didn't think it would be THAT high! What's the rationale behind it then?

tibby : and thats something to be even vaguely proud of?... they've had as long as MS to develop the console and they're more than a year behind them?... doesn't that smack of something going SERIOUSLY wrong?

Sony just seem to have made some REALLY bad design decisions with the PS3, and now they're trying to patch their way around them...

It is called hubris ... they just expected that we would all wait around patiently for the PS3 and buy them in the millions just like the PS2.

Remember when even the Sony fanboys moaned about the price of the premier nice 60GB unit wif all the toppings and Kataguri just said something to the line of it is so bloody special that we should all just work overtime to be able to buy this wonder box.

But they totally underestimated Microsoft's second attempt namely the Xbox 360.

It all adds up.

Yeah, heard My Kataguri utter some choice phrases... like calling the Wii an impulse buy... flipping heck, Nintendo prob love that concept.

tibby.dude : from my understanding there is no ps2 emotion/reality engine onboard, its all software driven like in the xbox360... the big chewers are the blu-ray drive and the cell cpu and the RSX (which isn't as stunning as they'd hoped)

Decent software emulation of the PS2 was not possible within the timeframe (some don't think the Cell CPU is really capable in that regard) so they included the integrated Emotion/Graphics Synth chip from the PS2 slimline for the first gen PS3.

Here is a pic of it in the PS3.

Sure but ultimately they're a business, what's the rationale behind making a loss on each unit, how do they hope to make it up?

Ah ok, I stand corrected, I thought they'd shelved the ps2 chip inside idea....

Syndyre : for one they hope for economies of scale, and licensing/royalties on games sold.

MS took a knock on each 360 as well, but ppl think they're making about 70$ per console nowadays thanks to manufacturing gains etc....

By selling lots of games and accessories where Sony gets a cut from each sale... this is called the "attach" rate ... i.e the avg number of games sold per each console.

I think Nintendo is the only one who makes a small profit on each console sold since theirs is just a rehashed GameCube V 1.5

Attach rates currently

Xbox360 5.2
Wii 1.82
PS3 0.98

In the case of the PS3 it is really only "Resistance:The Fall of Man" that makes a dent.

Ok, its the old adage of giving away the razor and selling the blades I guess. :)

in honest truth, the ps3 kicks the xbox360 up the ars... i mean the controllers are much more advanced(althought they could use a new design), i mean in cod3 to open a hatch you turn the control around, and with fighting games you use the control to take the punchs. as for the graphics ,they very close the the xbox360's and these are only the first batch of games. the next will match the xbox. it's got a 60gb harddrive, memoery card reader, BUILT IN WIFI, hdmi tv out's and a blue ray unit, all of these are NOT included when you buy your xbox360. in any case the ps3 will support ps2 and ps1 games which means thats those who have a **** house full of ps2 games will have the option of continueing to play them. now the basic thing is WHEN WILL IT COME OUT? but in honest truth, im more worried about us getting support for the darn thing. we a very small country in the eyes of the big companies, thus they look at us, laugh and say, wow is it really worth actually give support to a country who of which only 1 or 2 million people could afford it, and only 100 000 to 500 000 people would actually buy it.

PSX and PS2 compatibility is a moot point. No point in buying a next gen console to play games that a console from the mid nineties and 2000 could play. It's not going to look better and PS2 games are really looking crap now more than ever.

BD capability is not worth anything when there is no blu-ray content and there may not be depending on how this war resolves itself.
Same with 360, if you don't have a capable display then the 1080p output capability is wasted. :/

PS3 brings nothing useful over the 360, and the lack of vibration would really irk me as that just kills the game. Besides, 360 is likely to look better than PS3 for the remaining life span of both consoles. Xenos is better than RSX :)
