I've tried various methods of streaming media wirelessly to my PS3. Some of them were OK and others just sucked. Most require some configuration before they work properly. But, this week I decided to try PS3 Media Server and I am so impressed!

It has been around a few months and it is 100% free. It is Java based program and once installed it automatically shares ALL your drives with the PS3. I have a fresh install of Windows 7 / PS3 Media Server (haven't loaded any extra codecs) and so far I can play every clip on my PS3 I've tried including QuickTime HD trailers and .MKV files.

If you haven't tried it yet I suggest you give it a go :p

Been around for longer than a few months ;) Its the best app i could find. I just stream through my network, even manges 1080p .mkv files no problem (needs a core2duo to encode). Best app ever!! Actually reminds me, need to see if i can donate to the developer. :)

I love this app. It even handles FLAC audio files so no need for crappy mp3 quality music. I still prefer converting and copying 1080p mkv files to my PS3 hard drive though

Yeah, I also use it. But dont you find it a bit irritating? If a vid is 640 x 320, and you play it on your TV at that res...its tiny! Then if you change the option to display it full screen...the quality goes down the tube.

Its a very nice media server...but ja...I cant handle watching the vids I have when full screen on our 40", the quality is crappy when its full screen :( , so I just watch my vids on my pc

Haha, the better your TV the crappier bad quality videos look. DSTV looks terrible on my full HD TV. Watch 720p videos to get the best of the server, 1080p if your TV can handle it

I've been using Tversity.
I had a look at PS3 Media Server. I can't remember what made me go Tversity.
Maybe I'll give it a go.

Ps3 media server works a charm, will never look back. Also WMP on win7. Tversity gave me major issues, server not found, etc.

I dumped TVersity for this prog. Works like a charm.

Can you say why?
I've been having sound issues with TVersity, I thought it was probably the files themselves. Does it sort that out?

I'm def going to give it a go now.

Oh OK. Don't know how I missed it before then when I was testing them all :p

Well for one thing you don't have to sit and add media to share. By default your entire PC is accessible.

Keen to hear how it goes with other new users :)

Awesome software, have been using for quite some time as well..
There might be the odd file or two that will be unable to play in it's standard form. This however is also not a problem. In the PS3's XMB, above the folder contaning your file, there should also be a folder called "Transcoded", just use that instead, and you should then be able to play what what was previously a problem. Transcodes on the fly.

Same here...have the Sony Full HD 40". Some channels on DSTV...using the word terrible to describe the picture quality doesnt even seem fitting.

Yea, the solution is to get better quality video man.

Yeah, but have a few vids from leaching from friends etc...like xgames vids, Travis Pastrama motorcross vids and Ken block stuff etc etc. List goes on, like all the bike and car vids etc. Just seems like a waste to watch these eye candy vids on my pc screen.

Oh well :erm:

Btw, the advertised version is the 1.10 series. If you look at the forums, near the top, there's a post with a link to the 1.11(eeerrrr .356, iirc) series, which I am using and is fairly stable. It also adds plugin support, so you can use movieinfo plugin if you really want.

For what it's worth, don't enable movie thumbnail generation, as it slows down folder access dramatically.
