PS3 price cut

I haven't checked up on the latest, but does the PS3 run linux easily ? I know there was a distro for that sort of thing.. If I could run Linux on it, for various uses + play the odd game, play movies on it, R2400 is a damn good price for a HTPC/gaming platform.

Official press release on the Sony Europe website. Important point to note is towards the end of the document, namely....

Removal of “Install Other OS” feature

The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.

This of course is related to the new Slim version.... so if you REALLY want to run Linux on a PS3, you'll have to grab one of the older PS3's.

Didn't they state that the release is 1 Sept, and 11 Sept for all other regions? (ie, we peeps here in SA?)

The new PlayStation®3 (PS3®) system will become available in stores from September 1, 2009, in North America, Europe/ PAL territories and Asian countries and regions at a very attractive recommended retail price (RRP) of US$299 and €299, respectively.

Don't see anything related to a September 11 release date, seems to be 1 September for all regions other than Japan.... of course, this doesn't mean that WE will be seeing it on 1 September, but its a possibility.

Also, for those wanting to do a comparison of stats on the various PS3 models, http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/tabulator-ps3-slim-and-phat-sized-up/

dam this price drop could be some good news. I will not mind and I am sure my wife will actually agree at getting it with the price drop been trying to convince her for a while now that we "NEED" one but she does simply not listen hehehehehe

I have a PS2 and it gethers dust. I doubt that it's seen 40 gaming hours in its entire life, which includes kids who visit playing it. So, I'm glad the prices are being dropped, but I still don't intend on buying a PS3, XBOX or Wii. Maybe Project Natal will change my mind, who knows :)

I'm sure many of you will disagree, but I'd rather invest in a PC.

They say the Slim model is a lot less noisy... So I was thinking of buying this one for a Blu-Ray player would I be able to hear my movies ;)

It will never br R2,400 in SA,
It will just be a R1000 less than current pricing.

remember when 360 arcade was R1700 last nov. Now it costs more then what i paid for it(with 4 free games) 2 years ago.

Rand weakens ---> price of Xbox goes up.

Rand strengthens ---> nothing

PS3 price is being reduced because of lack of sales... No wonder they don't sell with games costing R650+

Yes and no.

They need to reduce the price in order for it to compete with the 360

They have also cut production costs by 70% so they can then reduce the retail price
