PS3 pricing (and Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD)

Is the PS3 price going to drop anytime soon or is R4500 the best price for the next 6 months?

It looks to me that Blu-Ray is going to win the war. ( http://www.ioltechnology.co.za/article_page.php?iArticleId=4196234 )

I was trying to get a HD-DVD player from overseas, but looking at what's happening now with most of the companies backing Blu-Ray. So instead of paying R6500 for a Blu-Ray player, I'll rather just buy a PS3.

(Microsoft should have shipped the xbox with the HD-DVD drive)

3. Rather get a cheap stand alone Blu-Ray player in 2 months
4. I prefer my gaming console to play games and not be a trojan horse in some dumb HD war ;)
 
But you are a hard core gamer.

Me I am not as hard core -- occasional gamer only. Thus all the media trojan horsing is actually welcome as it comes thrown in at the price. I have spent more on Blueray movies than on game titles so far and that is likely to continue for me.

The fact that it plays games and does so decently is a bonus for this PS3 owner.

Well yeah if you are a movie buff who is more interested in movies than games then the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player in South Africa...
 
Might it be the best buy High Definition player in SA too now that Warner Bros has joined the blue camp?

And it even play games, upscales sd dvd, does DivX, act as media centre, connects to the net etc. Who needs a media PC or a standalone HD player.
 
Except that blew ray has region coding and HD-DVD doesn't.

If you buy a ps3 here you won't be able to play the cheaper US movies. If you get an HD-DVD player you will be. You should also remember that in Europe most of the movies that are on blew ray are on HD-DVD as well due to European Union competition laws.
 
Quite a few Blue ray titles are not region coded even though the box says they are. Mainly the movies that have already been released and are now being released on Blueray format

Maybe overseas, but I don't think South Africa will see a cheap Blu-Ray player in the next 2 years. The companies over here are too busy ripping us off.
 
personally i think a ps3 is the coolest device so far. runs linux, does dvd, reads scratched cds, plays games and is remote controllable from a psp.

Maybe not, but the decisive battle has ended. With major studio support at 5:2, the software availability for HD-DVD will gradually die off.

Not going to happen. The prices of Blu-ray players is likely to drop by around 30% over the next year. Currently at R5-6K, it'll still be a better deal to get a PS3 in a years time.

Which doesn't mean that it isn't very good at being just that. If you're an occasional gamer, and watch a lot of movies, a PS3 is a great solution. You're just a gaming snob :D

What movies? If 5 of the seven major studios are Blu-ray exclusive, it doesn't matter that the movies are theoretically cheaper if they don't exist on the format. Want to post a link to some info on your European story? It sounds like crap to me. Releasing software on a particular format is a business decision and has nothing to do with competition laws. If that was the case, then Apple would be forced to supply their proprietary software on all platforms (FinalCut HD for Linux anyone?).
 
today i finally got the update for xbox (that allows xvid and divx) been on holiday :)

anyways - what a pleasure. linked my removable hardrive (filled with movies) to the xbox and bam - instant media player.

when the video store down the road starts stocking HD anything i will make my choice on what player to get.

out of interests sake why are so many people conned into believing the ps3 is a solution? for that kinda money you could buy an xbox, hd player and some movies + games.

And still own a technically inferior Microsoft product!
 
Hate to break it to you but there is nothing technically inferior about the XBox..
Both the PS3 and XBox 360 are fantastic products and there is very little between them... Apart from the PS3 playing Blu-Ray's which may or may not end up being a master stroke... either way I will wait for stand alone players.

Like was mentioned before, I am a gaming snob ;)

Gavin I know pal! So you wait! As I said before the PS3 pricing for the Older unit was fully justified due to the integral Blu-ray drive. If I have the option I will still buy the Older version with PS2 compatibility. It is worth it as for that few rand more you get a far advanced technology than the Xbox can offer. Add a Blu-ray drive to the XBox and see where you end up in price.

Typical of you to state I am trolling when I state a viewpoint just because the Xbox360 nappy army dissagrees with my viewpoint, which is an actual fact......An PS3 minus Blu-Ray is still more advanced than the Xbox 360.
Everyone is entitled with their view and You can do nothing about it. Stop belittling posters just because they dissagree with your trivial viewpoints.

Everybody take a chill pill. I should have known this thread would start Xbox vs PS3 war. Both are very good console, each with their adv. and disadv.

At the moment I own a Xbox360, which I think is great (except I feel cheated because a HDMI port should have been included). I know games looks great through component, but I would have liked a HDMI port for DVD upscaling.

I like my games, but I enjoy watching movies as well. That's why I was looking at finding a HD-DVD player, but thanks to Microsoft for taking their time and not yet releasing the HD-DVD player in SA. So now that most companies are backing Blu-Ray, I'm looking at the PS3.
 
You are going to to be blown away when you see how good HD looks looks on a decent sized screen. You will never go to a movie theatre again. I have the PS3 linked up to a 92 ich screen using a projector and I cannot even begin to tell you how stoked I am with it. Watched Pirates 3 last night off Blueray and it truly is gob smackingly good.
