hey guys. maybe a dumb question, but can i connect my ps3 to my laptop through the hdmi connection so i can use my screen? i have a toshiba satellite a300... please tell me this works, would really help...!

thanks!

I don't think you can do that. Your PS3 HDMI port is an OUT port. Your laptop's HDMI port is also an OUT port.

The cable will probably fit (HDMI cables are the same on either end, and all HDMI ports are the same, AFAIK), but I doubt it will work.

Also, I'm not sure how intelligent the HDMI standard and technical design is, but I would be scared to connect an HDMI out port to another HDMI out port - it might screw up something, like maybe your graphics cards (on PS3 and laptop!) or something else...

You can connect it to an LCD screen though, one that has an HDMI IN port, or an HDTV with an HDMI IN port.

ah well that sucks! it will connect to, say the samsung 2333SW though?

If you're talking about this Samsung LCD monitor, then NO, well at least not through HDMI, coz it doesn't have an HDMI port.

It's got a VGA out port though, as well as DVI out. I'm not sure if your PS3 has VGA out or DVI out (it most likely has both). You'll have to connect audio seperately, using the audio out ports (RCA, 3.5mm, etc).

Nice thing about HDMI is that its BOTH AUDIO & VIDEO in one cable. So if your monitor has built-in speakers (Like an LCD TV) then there's no extra wires needed.

I recommend buying a monitor that takes HDMI input. Built-in speakers will also be nice, but are not a must. It depends what you want to use the monitor for, and if you already have a surround sound sytem, or if you are planning to invest in one....

A PS3 doesn't have VGA out but there is a 3rd party VGA cable that allows for display via VGA.

I guess then you better make sure that you buy a monitor with an HDMI port. Will save you some money, and lots of trouble, and time, in the long run...

I read that there is a hdmi to dvi which would make it possible... But will i still achieve full hd this way? And i heard computer monitors are 16:10 instead of 16:9, which a ps3 needs, leavin a slightly stretched display. Any recommendations on a decent monitor that will support all this?

Yes you get HDMI to DVI convertors. I don't think there is any loss in image data or image quality. You should be able to achieve Full HD resolutions (and probably higher, if your graphics card supports it). However, DVI doesn't carry audio. So you lose this advantage - which I consider to be the best thing about HDMI.

I'm not sure about this... Maybe someone else can answer this. Try searching google about it.

Personally, I'd still go for a monitor with HDMI input. I guess I'm just a bit anal about having everything use the same, single, standard, from PS3, to laptop, to surround sound, to Monitors, to HDTV. Oh, and I hate wires!

Search Kalahari.net, Take2 and other online retailers to see what is available. You can also check Makro and Game.

Passive DVI/HDMI adapters are widely available. This is because DVI is electrically compatible with HDMI, which means that you will suffer NO loss of quality due to any conversions.

"Full HD" is a marketing term to refer to a vertical resolution of at least 1080 pixels, interlaced, with a 16:9 aspect ratio. You're probably looking to take it a step further and get a 1080 pixel vertical resolution, progressive. Yes, you can easily get 1080p from a DVI/HDMI adapter. You can also get it from VGA. And if I'm not mistaken, you can also get it from Component video. The downside to these last 2 options is that you will be using analog signalling; susceptible to noise, which will manifest in the picture.

Regarding the 16:10 vs 16:9 issue; you can get computer monitors that have a 16:9 aspect. Personally, I run mine off a TV that has a 16:9 aspect. I know that you can also set the PS3's video output up. Not sure if it gives you an option for 16:10 vs 16:9; never tried on a 16:10.
