PS4 reveal

Now that the PS4 uses x86 architecture I have a feeling it will use NTFS and support .mkv,.flac formats (crossing fingers) which eliminates the need for a BR player

I was gonna respond with this:

Why use NTFS when you have to pay royalties to MS? There are other file systems out there that are free an much better than NTFS.

But then I remembered this:

Because it works on Windows?!

And given the percentage of people that use Windows, it would make some sense to allow NTFS to work.

Just because you've been doing something for a long time doesn't mean you are doing the right thing

That doesn't mean that Sony got it right though, just that they were too stubborn to change their design.

Fair enough, but you have to admit, you probably had no complaints with the Playstation controller for years, until you played with the 360's... I dunno, I suppose I am just so used to it by now. But the 360's controller is superb.

Yeah but that's not saying much. I'm sure you had no complaints about drinking cheap booze as a student, until you could afford a proper single malt :D Doesn't mean that progress shouldn't be made.

How does the PS4 running NTFS or another FS affect anything else but the PS4? What benefits are there to users, NTFS might be widely used but how would using it on the PS4 benefit anyone. The underlying FS is irrelevant to the upper layers, apps, connected devices etc. Everything works via the OS and the OS deals with the FS, the underlying FS is of no concern.

Somebody please explain this to me.

Na, I hear you :D

I was actually planning on getting the Xbox One, but MS ruined that idea... so ja, shameless Sony fanboism returns...

I think that what the OP was referring to (and what I responded on) is external hard drive support, and not natively using NTFS as the file system on the console. The PS3 only supported external drives formatted to FAT32, which makes watching those high quality Linux distros impossible.

I would much prefer that the PS4 read external hard drives using a better file system such as EXT4. But, at the same time, I am with Mike on this one- dedicated devices per element of my usage criteria.

This is exactly what i meant, also the PS4 has to use something that windows recognises otherwise flash drives won't work.

PS4 is my 1st choice this time round anyway both because it has more power and the DRM issue.

I'm surprised though that nobody is concerned about privacy issues with mandatory Kinect combined with the recent revelations about government spying. MS also has a patent to scan how many people are watching a rented movie and charge accordingly - this does not sit very well with me.

Not to be paranoid here but until I now for a fact that my privacy will be protected I'll be very nervous about letting a smart 3d camera that can see in the dark driven by a closed source system that I don't control and can't switch off into my house.

I'm I the only one really bothered by this?

This is why they need it connected to the internet all the time.

I don't want them to watch me jerk off either.

With SA's terrible ADSL,there will be so much stuttering plus poor quality so you could easily pull it off...

OR you can just put something over it so they cant see you...
