So we are now quite a bit into this generation of consoles and I think it is time to get one for the kid (I'll play a bit as well).

Currently we have the Xbox 360.

Which one should I buy and why from a SA perspective? The kid is 9 years old.

It really depends on what you intend doing with it. I'd say that if you're going to be using the console purely for gaming, definitely PS4. But if you intend on using it to watch shows and use streaming services and the like, Xbox.

However, I know that when I was 9 all I wanted to do was game. Plus, in SA not many streaming services are available yet i.e. Netlfix, Hulu etc.

At the same time if you're used to the Xbox interface, it might be better to go via that route.

What Jaybay said. Streaming Netflix from your XBone is extremely easy to set up. But if you are going to use it purely for gaming then go PS4. I barely use my XBone for gaming. Netflix, Youtube and Twitch is basically all I use it for.

I have both and like both. I usually get cross-plat games on the PS4 though. You won't go wrong either way.

For your situation I would consider the Xbox One, especially with backwards compatibility coming next month...

I have both consoles, I prefer my PS4 and use it quite a bit more than the Xbone. Nothing wrong with either devices though
As previously stated, due to Xbone going backwards compatible. It will more than likely be the better option for you. Unless you don't plan on playing any of your x360 games again

With the new features coming out with the Windows 10 release for the xbone, i foresee myself using the console a lot more than i am now

Yeah, as others have said, PS4 for gaming. Playstation is just doing eerything right this gen. They are so far ahead in sales, and they are getting a lot content exclusive, or sooner than XBone.

PS4 can stream via the web browser no? And it has apps for Youtube and plex?
And you can watch content via the USB port now.

I use the netflix, bbc iplayer and youtube apps from my PS4, and it works really well. The media player works ok, if your content is in the right format.

Buy the console which your friends have so you can play together or the one that has exclusives you want

I suppose you can stream via web, but have you ever used Netflix? You can't compare streaming over browser to Netflix.

No haven't used Netflix before.

But according to this there is a Netflix app.

Yup. Just create a dummy psn account, set to the UK in my case, and you can download the apps from the store. Once it's installed, your regular account on the PS can access it.

Xbox One with Kinect for a 9 year old. Kids get the most fun out of that also the console and controllers seems more durable than the PS4's. You might want to check what consoles his friends are using if he plans on swapping games. Backwards compatibility is another huge factor especially since there are many cheaper kid friendly games available on the XBox 360.

Guys if you register a US PS4 account you get so much more out of the PS4. Its got all the benefits that the xbone has... plus you get Netflix, hulu, youtube, and more. and the games are somewhat cheaper, I have both accounts, and I can stream using my US account even my game data is still playing on the US account, thinking about cancelling my SA account and just fully using my US...

We are really PS4 underpriveledged here as there is so much more content available in the other countries.

and yet they can't seem to add backwards compatibility?

Because you don't need it. We're two years into the new gen already. Absolutely no reason to backwards.

Xbone are scrambling to build up goodwill after their **** ups.

yes, no one likes to go back and play old games. they would rather lets discs sit there and go unused.

i don't know, but does PS4 allow you to play your own background music or remap controller buttons (not sure if MS is playing catch up here).

It's a huge feature. I'd still like to be able to play some of my old games (like the Mass Effect trilogy so that I can carry over my old saves into the new game). My old library is huge. Means I can get rid of my 360 and free up some space in my TV unit...

Lol, here we go.

You have an Xbox360, happy with the controller, get an Xbone.

They're great, honestly. And I thought I'd only use it for playing games...but I'm using it for streaming vid just as much.

Yes, and you don't need a R1500 controller to do it.

Look it's obvious you've made your allegiance already. Don't think there's more to discuss.

All I'm really seeing is people that got 360 are getting pissed off at how well the PS4 is doing.
