PS5

Never thought I'd regret ordering my beautiful Dbrand Darkplates, but thanks to the new N64-inspired versions of them, suddenly I kinda do. Might order another set regardless.

Personally I love it, that orange looks so sick. A tad on the pricey side though

I'll gladly participate in a test- a 30fps vs 60fps.

I'll even put money on it.
As I will be printing money by doing this, I'll be super generous, and offer 2:1 - if I cannot say if it is 30 or 60fps, I'll give 2, if I can, I'll get 1. Choose whatever multiple of 1 you like.

No, no, you don't get to pick and choose your extremes :)

It will cover a variety of conditions, including the monitor screen speed etc

if the test is "can you see the difference between 70fps vs 80fps)", or "the difference, while playing a game, without a comparison, between high and ultra", then I will skip that, as I never claimed that, infact I said that when VRR is involved, you cannot really tell (which is the entire point of 120hz/VRR) :)

30FPS/quality vs 60fps/performance however is clear as day (and I will choose 60fps 100% of the time, because during gameplay, medium/high vs ulta/rts/whatever quality is meaningless to me)

edit: as I like to question myself, maybe I am wrong, I just went to my PS5 now, and changed HFW to "Quality" mode, and it pretty much made the game junk, the jank was so bad - given this is could be because I am accustomed to 60fps.

Have you tried a game at 40FPS? I think Ratchet & Clank supports it. Curious what you think...still want to try it out myself.

I have ratchet and clank, so if I can be bothered, and remember, i'll give it a go :)

but I think then it is not locked at 40FPS, and is basically a 30-60 VRR range, but could be wrong

You don’t need 120hz for VRR but I’ve seen very few 60hz TVs that have it. I think it’s only the one Hisense OLED. Pity, because VRR makes a lot of sense for consoles targeting 30-60fps. That’s where it offers the most benefit.

Had to rewatch the DF video on this, but it's not relying on VRR to hit the target frame rate. Ratchet and Clank had a 40FPS mode before VRR was available on the PS5. It's basically just fidelity mode but instead of the screen capping it at 30 it's being capped at 40 (that's why it's only possible on 120Hz).

Wether VRR is now supported for 40FPS mode I don't know, can't really find a straight answer, but I don't think so as the PS5 VRR drops off at 48FPS

Someone on the Sony legal team is getting executed for this today, but interesting to see the budgets of these games:
and this doesn't even include the marketing budgets for these games, no wonder Sony decided to push their games to pc.

Looks like the its heating up in the FTC court battle

Xbox Game Pass Deals Often Block PS Plus Release, Sony Reveals

Sony has revealed that contrary to Microsoft’s claims, it is in fact Xbox Game Pass that often mandates exclusivity, blocking out PS Plus releases. In August 2022, Microsoft claimed that Sony pays for what it calls “blocking rights” to keep games off of Game Pass. According to documents submitted by Sony in the Microsoft and Activision vs. FTC court battle, it is Microsoft that requires subscription exclusivity.

The document in question, which has now been pulled but seen by multiple outlets, reveals that Microsoft and Sony make competing bids for games to go on their respective subscription services. Sony claims that it does not “typically” require subscription exclusivity, but Microsoft is more aggressive on that front. Two of the games that Sony lost the bids to were Valheim and Immortality.

But . . . what hypocrisy is this?

Microsoft CEO Says He Wants to End Exclusive War, Blames PlayStation

The Federal Trade Commission hearing with Microsoft and Activision has dealt heavily with exclusive games. But according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, there shouldn’t even be console-exclusive games to begin with.

Satya Nadella says Sony has “defined market competition using exclusives”

As reported by The Verge, Nadella said he would even get rid of exclusives, but it wasn’t Microsoft’s place to define those terms, given its status as a “low share player in the console market.” He then said Sony’s prominence has “defined market competition using exclusives,” so that is the standard.

“If it was up to me, I would love to get rid of the entire exclusives on consoles, but that’s not for me to define especially as a low share player in the console market,” said Nadella. “The dominant player there [Sony] has defined market competition using exclusives, so that’s the world we live in. I have no love for that world.”

PlayStation President Says Other Publishers Dislike Xbox Game Pass

This isn't the first time an industry figure has criticized Xbox Game Pass.

As a part of the ongoing FTC-Microsoft trial, Sony's top gaming executive claimed that Sony is not the only big publisher taking issue with Game Pass.
According to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan's deposition (via The Verge), he claims to have "talked to all publishers they unanimously do not like Game Pass, because it's value destructive." Ryan then continues to say that this opinion is a "very commonly held view by publishers," and he doesn't believe that Call of Duty would be on Game Pass if the acquisition isn't approved.
This isn't the first time Game Pass has been criticized. Somerville devs stated that Xbox Game Pass hurt its sales earlier this year. The co-founder of Jumpship had this to say about Game Pass affecting its sales:
"I also think it hurts sales. Because a lot of people just go in and try it, and they don't invest. If they don't like the first 10 minutes? That's it. Also, if you don't make the first 10 minutes amazing, maybe it's also a problem. I think [Game Pass] is okay. It's not my favorite. My favorite is the old premium model, where I sell you on some video, on big images and earn your $30. And then after that, I have to deliver. I don't need to get money out of you later."
But even though some publishers have been vocal about Game Pass affecting sales, it hasn't stopped other developers from working with Microsoft. Mike Rose, the found of No More Robots, told GameSpot that the studio has seen its games sell better when they're on Game Pass or just about to leave. But one of the biggest challenges of being on Game Pass is that it's hard to tell how many copies would have sold on Xbox if it weren't on the service.

and this doesn't even include the marketing budgets for these games, no wonder Sony decided to push their games to pc.

Yea, that was inevitable. It also makes sense why they are more aggressively pursuing live service games. However, even with those big budgets they are likely making a nice profit on these games:

But . . . what hypocrisy is this?

Because remember, it's only bad when Sony does it:

PlayStation exclusives:
Xbox exclusives:
Nintendo exclusives:

Microsoft and Phil Spencer in particular have cultivated this idea that Sony is evil while doing arguably worse things in the background. You can see this in US media as well, IGN with Ryan McDuffy constantly pushing an anti Sony agenda, The Verge with Tom Warren. Even ResetEra locks any threads created that puts MS in a slightly bad light.

I'm hoping this ABK deal goes through so that they can fsckoff from trying to buy out Japanese developers, at least for a while. They already looked at Square Enix twice in the past, and made it clear that they will not only cut off beloved historic IP from Sony but also Nintendo.
