PS5

I mean, it's not a "MUST" per se, so I can continue with the PS4 on the TV but I definitely don't wanna use my current TV once I get a PS5 as my TV is a few years old now (and I don't really plan on buying a new fancy TV that's more suited for PS5 gaming, would much prefer a monitor).

Can you perhaps provide a few examples please? If I increased the budget to R6K let's say? And if that's still too cheap then the cheapest most compatible PS5 monitors :)

What's wrong with your TV? Meaning, what do you wish did better when it comes to gaming? My old full 2010 HD LCD (not LED) Samsung TV is still pretty damn good, probably better than my 4K 2018 Samsung TV, except for input lag. Older isn't always worse, especially when it comes to TVs and monitors.

Why do you want a monitor over a TV?

There are good reasons, but there will always be a compromise. Monitors are more expensive than TVs, and if you don't plan to use it for using a computer it just doesn't make sense.

For the price of one of these

There may be cheaper options on other sites, but I trust Wootware.

You can get one of these:

I use an LG OLED 42" as a gaming monitor with my PC, and it actually works really well, especially when you lean back in your chair with a controller in your hand. With a 24" monitor you will need to sit upright like when you work on a PC.

If you want to use the monitor for PC gaming and PS5 gaming, I would just get a 1440p monitor.

Only "gaming" tv i would invest in is OLED with hdmi 2.1 and amd freesync.

But the 48 inch starts at around R19-R20k so not in everyones budget.

For your budget of monitors you cant go wrong with LG ultragear. Dell or AOC are also good monitor brands with good warranties,

These two are both good

For a "real PS5 experience", you want 4K 120hz with VRR (freesync), and you're not going to get that on a monitor for R4K.

That is the ideal option, add the word OLED to that sentence and you're set for ages.

But at the moment, you're not really losing out much by going for less. In reality the experience being put out by devs is pretty far from 4K/60-120. The latest big hit is Helldivers 2 at 1080p/60.

120Hz does unlock a useful 40FPS mode, but it's very much a niche mode that you find on mostly 1st party stuff which kinda renders it redundant as those first party studios are so good at optimization that they already have 60fps performance modes using decent upscaling tech. This may change as time goes on.

I'm happily running a 65" 4K/60 TV I picked up on special for R12k and haven't gotten a strong urge to move my PS5 over to my R20k 32" 4K/144Hz VRR monitor used on my PC or drop R38k on a 65" OLED replacement. Yet. If someone has the budget then go for it.

I will say that the monitor space is quite odd for gaming on the latest consoles. Make sure your 144Hz monitor actually supports 120Hz outside of PCs. My older 2019 Dell 27 inch 1440p/155hz monitor didn't support 1440p/120hz except on PC due to something with the onboard timings. Dell fixed it on the 2021 model.

Also some quirks about VRR over HDMI on PS5, I read on launch that you need HDMI 2.1 support on the monitor for VRR even at 1440p but it may have been updated, dont quote me on that.

While i wouldn't recommend everech, and would also watch/read a review before recommending either of those, LG makes great panels and 1440p is a great compromise res and good value for money.

For ps5 gaming i would still rather use my TV and save the money for a greater upgrade down the line.

Anybody get an email from Sony titled:

Introducing passkey: password-free sign-in for PlayStation

Make your account password-free
Say goodbye to forgotten—or difficult-to-remember—passwords and speed up your account access with passkey.

By eliminating the need for a password, passkey lets you sign in and get into your games more quickly, without compromising your account security.

Passkeys are a safer option than passwords and other authentication methods. They cannot be guessed or re-used, and they are resistant to phishing and data breaches, enhancing the security of your account.

I added a 4 digit sign in code, but dont think this is the same thing.

I have it connected to an HDMI 2.0 port and just set the PS to 1440p. Can't tell the difference between that and 4k anyway, and at least this way still get the benefits of HDR, VRR etc...

It's a bit tough on that budget.

Few games actually go above 60fps (Splinter and friends can correct me if I'm wrong), so I wouldn't spend money just for that while still gaming at 1080p.

I would never again buy a VA panel for gaming, unless I have a trusted review stating that it doesn't smear. Claimed 1ms response time doesn't mean much imo, and that pretty much rules out all Samsung monitors.
For example, look at this: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/odyssey-g3-s24ag30
1ms response time, but slow response time with lots of smearing.

MUST you get a monitor, or can you continue gaming on your TV?

Splinter is not a visual guru, and has never gotten this FPS/hz/VRR/Freesync thing, as his eyes are of the sort that just don't get bothered with such things.

His eyes do pick up HDR though, which is another reason why you want a TV over a monitor.

Not yet, but that's great if it's happening

Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate the discourse on the topic, I'll do a bit more research but I think I'll go for a 1440p monitor as I see it's a great compromise and most games don't deliver on the 4K/120Hz. Will update once I found one I'm willing to purchase.

Also, to answer the question on my TV, it's a 11 year old (43 inch) Hisense that my father purchased (for R4K at the time) and it sucks now (it has a bit of a dimming issue as we got the LCD replaced but overall general viewing is fine), also it's been 11 years and I just want something different I suppose, hence a monitor.

Also, ~R12K is outrageous for a R4K 120Hz monitor, that's PS5 money:eek:

Gaming in an "office chair" with a controller and monitor is a terrible way to "relax" :X3:

Just play on a goddamn TV on your couch :p
I disagree.

I have an extremely comfortable ergonomic chair. My monitor is a 32" 4K 165Hz VRR HDR Dell with amazing colour accuracy, and is positioned just in front of my keyboard. So there is no realistic way to recreate the size and quality with a TV in my living room. I'd need to convert the entire wall into a projector setup or import a million dollar Samsung prototype from Korea.

Also, there are many days where the only time I have to play games are 1 or 2 hour breaks from work. With my Series X and PS5 at the edge of my desk, I can boot them up quickly, play a bit, refresh my headspace and then get back to work. It's super convenient.

Over and above that, the few times I've moved my consoles to the living room, I find most games a lot less enjoyable. The smaller display situation (even with a good-sized 4K TV) messes with the immersion I'm used to and severely cuts down my ability to appreciate a game's visuals.

Have a beer.

I tried playing the FF7 Remake that’s in PS+ and was so bored I uninstalled after about 2 hours. I couldn’t care less about part 2.
Lol i thought I was the only one. Never got into FF games after trying FF7 Remake as my first attempt at a FF game

You just reminded me I need to order more Black Label. Had my last one yesterday.

Same. Actually anime-looking crap in general.

Played the original FF7 on PS1 and enjoyed it, but I was 14 then. Now it just feels kind of childish...
Tales of Arise is pretty good imo. Hit Game Pass recently. It and Xenoblade Chronicles are the only JRPGs I can recall enjoying.
