I had one of those AOpen 700W PSUs with 4 12V rails. Very nice bit of kit and around R900 for it. It's the identical item to some or other much more expensively branded item out there. Made by the same manufacturer in China, identical unit. Couple of weeks ago I got home to a dead PSU thanks to Eskom. Fuse not blown, the thing is just toast.
Rushed out to ComputerMania at 8:30PM to get a new PSU. Distributors are oddly closed at that time of night.
Had no choice but to buy retail.
Picked up 460W Gigabyte PSU for around R450. Ugh... too few 12V rails, but I managed to get it running all 6 drives by flipping over the SATA power connectors.
The funny thing is.... this Gigabyte is identical in appearance and everything to the AOpen I had, except for the rails and power output. I suspect they're from the same manufacturer. Even the 12cm fan is identical.
My Zalman power meter says something interesting too... 30W less power consumed on idle than the larger power supply. That's alot of power wasted as heat. Even with DVD burner going, the power consumption never reaches the same power consumed by the larger PSU.
I'm not a big Gigabyte fan (from dealing with odd gigabyte BIOS stuff), but try out the Gigabyte range as well.
And yes, I am irritated with the amount of connectors PSUs have. It's a little silly providing that kinda power these days and having a pathetically small amount of power connectors.
My quest still continues for a well-priced unit with ample SATA connectors at a good price where I'm not paying more for the label compared to the product.
