Cape Town – The DA will not support advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s nomination for the Public Protector position because it claims she was on the State Security Agency's payroll while working as an immigration officer.

Her qualifications and experience made her unsuitable for the job, the party told reporters at Parliament on Tuesday.

DA MPs Glynnis Breytenbach, Phumzile van Damme, and Werner Horn intimated that Mkhwebane worked as a spy while employed as an immigration officer at the South African embassy in China.

This was one of the reasons they would not support her candidacy during Wednesday’s debate on her appointment.

The DA said several sources had reliably informed it that Mkhwebane had been on the SSA’s payroll while working in China.

“When asked in the interview why she had changed jobs for what is ostensibly a demotion, her reply was that she ‘was passionate about the Constitution’.

“While this is noble value to hold; it alone does not make her eligible for the position or separate her from the other more qualified candidates; and we have been advised that the time spent as an ‘immigration officer’ in China is also suspicious, having been informed that this is simply coded language for being on the payroll of SSA,” the DA said.

Mkhwebane could not be immediately reached for comment.

‘Constitutionally baseless’

The ANC chief whip called the DA’s opposition to Mkhwebane “perplexing, irrational and constitutionally baseless”.

The chief whip's spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said she was fit and proper for the post, and the ANC would vote for her.

Mkhwebane had worked for the SSA without any controversy or violation of the law.

“It is clear that the DA’s opposition has more to do with narrow political preferences than Adv. Mkhwebane’s qualification for office of the public protector. It is unfortunate that while on one hand parties rose above petty politics to guard the integrity of the Public Protector’s office, the DA on the other hand is seeking to blemish it with absurd political reasons,” Mothapo said in a statement.

Mkhwebane was selected from over 60 candidates who applied to take over from Thuli Madonsela when her term ends in October.

On Wednesday, Parliament’s Public Protector Ad Hoc Committee was expected to present its report to the National Assembly. She needed the support of at least 60% of the House. If she cleared that hurdle, her name would be sent to President Jacob Zuma, for him to sign off on the decision.

Obviously the DA will oppose anything which is supported by the ANC, like the did with CJ Mogoeng who later turned out to be a favourite of DA, they will come around on this one in no time.

Why not use a better example, like the dunce the ANC elected president? Should they come around on him too? F'king lol.

The DA are just being polite. This woman has a single focus in life, and that is the plight of refugees. Why do we always have to be content with second best. I'd love to see a public protector that is more occupied with the citizens of SA.

They did vote in favour for Madonsela

I dont understand what the issue is?

The article and DA isn't saying it outright, but everyone knows the SSA is Zuma's very first puppet department, he's leveraged SSA contacts and influence to create the snowball that has now become his rampant corruption.

Anyone with even a remote link to the SSA should sure as hell never be allowed near the Public Protector role, it's highly likely to be another Zuma puppet.

Is it the same like all whites are racist?

Is it the same like all whites are racist?

It's more like traveling back in time to the height of apartheid and saying it is highly likely that a South African white is racist :p

Now fast forward back to the present day and consider Zuma built his empire and his iron grip on state institutions via the SSA and the ANC and at the height of state capture / corruption the very same ANC is motivating for a person connected to the very same SSA to become public protector.

There are exceptions to every rule of course, but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, odds are it's swimming in a firepool ...

Neither do I. In fact, spies have made good politicians in the past.

Public Protector is not a politician's job. She's there to take on those in charge that are corrupt. Political "games" should be the furthest thing from her/his mind.

But this lady was not even a GM or a DG or even a manager there. She was an agent (nit employed by them) for the SSA, providing them with information about certain chinese individuals so I struggle to see how that has anything to do with her being tainted by this.

What if she was a cleaner at the SSA?

Will this hold the same for someone from the Hawks? SANDF? SAPS?

I know it is hard for most people, me included, but there are still some decent people in these structures trying their very best to perform their duties whilst upholding their morals and beliefs.

I am not saying this is the same with this woman as I know nothing about her, I am just saying I do not agree with painting everyome with the same crayon.

The DA have asked her some questions which she feels is not worthy of a proper reply. What should be of concern is that the ANC also believe that leaving those stones unturned is in the best interest of everybody.

Do you perhaps know what the questions were? If it were questions relating to her being an agent it is understandable seeing as she would not be allowed to talk about it.

The PP should however understand realpolitik.

But she disclosed having been an SSA analyst in the interview. I also don't see the problem to be honest

The issue is the DA are claiming that whilst she was working for HA in China, she was on the SSA payroll as a "spy"

Her move from home affairs to SSA was a demotion. The DA has not been given a proper answer on her motivation for taking a demotion. The obvious would be that she is an idiot and the more plausible that she is an ANC sock puppet..

Either way, would you want somebody like that to represent your interests?

They don't explicitly state she was a spy, just that she was on the payroll. Given she openly stated she worked there,I don't see the issue. If the DA had any proof she was a spy, then would published it
