Anyone heard about filling your tyres with nitrogen? Would you do it and why?

"At last, free nitrogen top-ups for your tyres. Where? At Total. Where else? Fill up at any participating Total service station and take advantage of their convenient, free nitrogen top-up service. Nitrogen isn’t dangerous, it’s a dry dead gas that cannot burn and is used in aircraft tyres, fire extinguishers F1 and other racing tyres.

Nitrogen gives better tyre pressure, prevents tyres from overheating and when correctly inflated it reduces fuel consumption, saving you money. And if you have air in your tyres it will improve tyre performance – extending tyre life.

KFM Website

Couldn't access the "click here" link on the Total website to find out which service stations got it, can anyone else access it?

Nitrogen is supposed to keep your tyre pressure more constant than plain old air as it supposedly does not get as hot as air...or something like that. IMHO it is just a sales gimmick to keep you going back to the place where you got it. Once filled with Nitrogen, you can't / should not top up with normal air.

In reality you will gain very little from this, don't bother.

I was very skeptical about Nitrogen and did some research on the internet (Google is your friend :) )

Seems like a lot of heavy long distance trucks use Nitrogen in their tires so they must know something.

Decided to try it as I have a car with small and expensive tires, after all nothing to lose, right ?

And it DOES work. Tires stay inflated longer (I top up about 2x a year!), tread last longer as the tire runs cooler (70,000 k's and the tread is still good!)

My car has done 120,000 K's, is 10 years old now, and only on the second set of tires

Give it a try when you have new tires fitted, and you will notice the tread lasts longer.

I fill with helium. Car feels a lots lighter on the road and my fuel consumtion has dropped due to the decreaed weight of the car....

I kid, but really air is 70% nitrogen so doubt there will be much difference, if its free why not try it though right.

I've seen nitrogen destroy a Terminator T1000, I don't want that stuff near my car! (and that was only liquid nitrogen, gas is even worse!!)

I kept my previous car's tyres filled with nitrogen over 2 sets of tyres (150,000km+) and never had a single issue. I tried having them checked on a monthly basis, but sometimes went for 3 months without checking. That said, I've bought a new car and haven't seen a real reason to switch from regular air to nitrogen

Nitrogen doesn't permeate the rubber of the tyre like much of what constitutes air would, hence tyres do maintain correct pressure better. With heavy strain on the tyres such as with extreme loads or prolonged high-speed driving, tyres filled with nitrogen will also stay cooler. However we're talking F1-type speeds, or truckloads of freight; not driving down to Durbs with an extra suitcase on the back seat at 130km/h...

For normal day-to-day driving - don't bother, placebo effect notwithstanding.

Unless you're going to the race-track for a few hours, it's useless. The only advantage is, like mentioned, it stays cooler (i.e. consistent tyre pressure).

F*** helium, Hydrogen all the way. :D

LOVE IT!! :D

I can just see your helium tyres flitting from tree to tree along with the birdies and the bees! :D :p

In 2006, I changed all 4 tyres. The car mileage was 60000km. Also changed to nitrogen at the same time. Done at tiger wheel 4ways. Today mileage is 131000km and tyres still have 5mm thread. Only filled nitrogen once in 2008. Probably sounds unbelievable. This was my experience with nitrogen in tyres.

Use Halon, that way if the tyre catches fire on the inside it can put itself out.

Uhm, are we speaking about liquid nitrogen in this thread? Real cool running... :-p
