Johannesburg - A 17-year-old girl died at the Eden Park Secondary School, Johannesburg, after a classmate pulled a chair out from under her, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

“They alleged that she was in class and as she was about to sit down, one of the learners took the chair [out from under her] and she fell,” Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

“She was taken to the sick bay and was certified dead by paramedics.”

The incident happened on Monday and was being investigated by Eden Park police.

Further information was not immediately available.

Neither the school's principal nor Gauteng Education Department spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane were immediately available for comment.

Either way you look at this story, it's grim and immensely sad. Condolences to her family and friends :(

How exactly did she die? It sounds like there is more to this ghastly narrative.

“She was taken to the sick bay and was certified dead by paramedics.”

So they carried her to sick bay? No-one bothered to check a pulse? Why isn't first aid a requirement for teachers?

Or she hit the back of her head against the desk behind her.

http://www.cdc.gov/traumaticbraininjury/

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health problem in the United States. Each year, traumatic brain injuries contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. In 2010 2.5 million TBIs occured either as an isolated injury or along with other injuries.

A TBI is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI may range from “mild,” i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness to “severe,” i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury.

Heck - I did that to someone at school. That poor kid who did it.

It seems like I am the only one here who did not pull pranks on other children? In my time a prankster caught 12 of the best across the bottom with a cane dipped in salt water, then made to speak to the entire school at assembly and admit his/her misdeameanour.

Yea, this is a tragic avoidable incident. This happened lots at school and it was funny as fark. Was warned though that one could get seriously injured even paralyzed but dead? Damn, I feel for the poor kid who pulled the chair from under her as well as the poor unsuspecting girl's parent and family

I caught lots of hidings but it never changed my mind. In hind sight for instance chucking black bags half filled with water down 2 stories was probably a bad idea but luckily there were no injuries.

did anybody smack a pupil on the back of the head while said pupil was drinking from a tap?

happened all the time when I was at school. stupid!

We were always enemies with the Afrikaans kids back in the early 80s in Junior school.
I remember climbing onto the concrete stairs which had high concrete edgings that were roughly 2M high.
I waited for 2 afrikaans kids to walk past and I attempted to dive tackle the one kid from the top of the concrete edging.
He walked past, I missed him and face planted into the ground.
Blood everywhere and my english buddies took me to the bathroom to sort the blood out lol.

We did stupid **** as kids.
I feel terrible for both parties involved.
