School I went to had desks similar to these (single-version in high school):

Fuskers used to stick thumb tacks on them so when you lowered the plank you sit on you had to check before you sat down.

There were however some classrooms like the computer lab, science lab etc with normal chairs. That's when you had to watch your back :D

The student who did it must be beside themselves with guilt as well, they should monitor them for signs of depression.

They should have thought of the consequences first before deliberately injuring somebody else.

everyone has their own parenting techniques, i can tell you tho a kid wants to know WHY they must do something, not WHEN. i experience too many people demanding their kids do something "because i said so." i see too many people dishing out punishment for small things, and i see too many people using their age, size and voice to bully a kid because they feel like they're teaching them something.

punishment can be deserved, but i see too many people quick to dish out punishment, i grew up with a mother that would literally go bat**** insane for simple things. my son also panics if he breaks something, and i've dealt with it in such way that if i break something of his(standing on a toy, dropping a glass) he tells me "it's okay dad, it's just an accident" :)

I actually have a old one like that - from my daughter's school. We helped them clean out a storeroom and found this ancient desk set in it. It even has space for the inkwell. Sturdy construction - looks like it can handle a car crash. It just needed some wood care and a new coat of paint. It even has brass plaque on the bottom from the TOD (Transvaal Onderwys Departement) showing when it was constructed for them by the Prison Services.
 
I remember when we had those desks and if you wrote on them you were put in DT and made to sand your desk as well as others that were covered in writing.

According to neurologists - they couldn't. the part of our brain that handles impulse control and risk/reward is the last to mature.
It turns out there is a scientific reason why most people under 21 are irresponsible little ****s.

I'm not condoning what they did but let's not get carried away here. It was a dumbass prank. Lots of people have had this done to them (repeatedly) and have never gotten hurt. I don't think they meant for this to happen. It was a freak accident and a tragedy for all involved.

Not even joking.

It's an unfortunate situation and anyone trying to make more of it is being a bit unnecessary.

I blame the parents and the kids upbringing. We were taught never to deliberately hurt somebody and we listened.
 
I remember a kid ripping open his nut sack while we were playing "Running Red Rovers." He tried to run around the line of defenders and caught his pecker on a small copper tap nut sack height. he was wearing no underwear and the one ball was actually hanging out of his pants :eek:

Strange shyte happen at school. That is just how it is. Put couple of 100 kids together and something is bound to happen.

You never in your whole life did something stupid that injured someone?
We did pranks and silly things all the time. 90% of the time no one got hurt. Other 10 % it was either our arses getting hurt or a few bloody noses and/or stitches. Kids will be kids.

Red Rover is dangerous! :eek:

We were playing it in grade 6. The other side asked X to come over. X went running full speed but she didn't manage to break the grip of the girls in front of her and got clotheslined. She flew forwards, did a reverse 180 in mid-air and landed on her head. I'm surprised she didn't break her neck. I'll never forget the fear on everyone's faces that day.

When it turned out that she was fine then it became very funny and we teased her about it for the rest of the year :D
