Pupil dies after classroom prank

I don't know if it has been updated, but I read in Die Burger this morning, that it was not a prank.

The two girls where arguing, the deceased said that she did not want to argue any further and went to go sit down. The other girl then pulled the chair from under her and you know what happened next.

Apparently the girl who pulled the chair and her family have fled.

Anyone have any updates to confirm this?

Now that changes the story completely.

This is getting interesting.
Seems the School tried to cover it up.

A grade 12 learner has died after a school prank that saw her fall awkwardly after a classmate pulled her chair.

Lerato Malekutu was declared dead by paramedics on Monday at Eden Park Secondary School in Ekurhuleni.

“It is alleged that the pupil was in class and as she was about to sit down, one of the pupils took the chair from under her and she fell,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego

Mogale.

“She was taken to the sick bay where paramedics certified her dead”.

An inquest docket into the death was opened at Eden Park police station.

According to media reports, the girl’s uncle said the school’s version was that the teenager had collapsed and hit her head on the floor but the family believed there’s more to the story.

The uncle said witnesses had seen a pupil pull Malekutu’s chair from under her, leading to the fall.

“The school did not tell me that. They told me that she fell. It was a cover up. Her best friend was the one who told the police the truth,”he said.

The Gauteng department of education sent condolences to the family of the deceased pupil and the entire school community of Eden Park Secondary School.

“At this stage the department cannot confirm what led to the death of the learner and has launched an independent investigation into the matter,” said Gauteng education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.

“The independent investigators visited the district office yesterday and will be visiting the school today for further investigations,” she said.

Sekhonyane said the department had sent a team to the school to provide trauma counselling to pupils and teachers affected by the incident.

Officials from the department will visit the family of the deceased pupil soon.

I was riding back on a chair at school. The back legs broke at the welding joints. I rigged it up for assembly as it was an awards assembly.
Poor unsuspecting girl sat on the chair and half way trough assembly it gave way. Flip did we hose ourselves laughing.

Gees I remember all these games!

I remember the game with the tennis ball through your legs. We use to call it "Fence". I remember we were playing once and it went between my legs. That adrenalin rush! I recall seeing the shortest route to the den (it was a fence, hence the name) was through a rose bush. I chose the rose bush over the beatings of 10-20 guys. The cuts and scratches were minor compared to the potential bruises.

I was in an all boys school. The initiation we went through in Std 6 was intense. The seniors loved it so much, we were considered as juniors all the way through until the end of Std 7. The Std 6's and 7's use to sit on an elevated balcony for assembly. Before the teachers arrived, the seniors use to make us all stand. We had to sing the various school rugby war crys. While we sang we were subjected to verbal and physical abuse. They would hurl all sorts of objects at us. We were not allowed to duck or avoid anything. Primarily they threw their shoes at us. Waterpolo balls, tennis balls and I even recall a battery was once were thrown at us.

The last night that the seniors would spend in the hostel at the end of the year, they would walk through the dorm of the Std 7's, with a hockey ball in a sock. While we lay in our beds, they would walk past, throw sour milk on us and then beat us with the sock in the ball. Many of us put cricket pads and ball boxes on, but still didn't help deflecting the majority of the blows.

I remember a guy was caught skipping rugby war cry singing practice. He was put up in front of the matrics and told to sing a solo. While he sung, they threw shoes and what ever else at him. Eventually a guy got up and threw him off the stage. He was surrounded by 10 or so matrics who kicked and punched the poor guy as he lay on the ground. After a minute or two, it was stopped. The poor guy could barely stand.

Damn, thinking back ... School was hectic.

By the time I became a senior all these practices were phased out entirely.

Okay - that's not really sounding like innocent fun.
There's no 'fair game' where anyone else can receive as good as they get.

Luckily they were phased out. It could have led to deaths by the way you described things!

That was the mid 90's.

We were told it was way worse in the 80's and so on. The turning point was with one guy who had his arm broken. The teachers started clamping down big time on it.

I've heard stories about boarding school that makes me so glad I never went there. Guys got away with a lot of stuff before cellphone cameras. I did a year at Rez while at RAU (UJ). When I switched universities they asked me if I'd like to join in the First Year initiation. I had a good laugh at that and told them to **** off.

Back to the topic at hand - did anyone see that other thread about the bullying incident between some girls?

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how the cycle of bullying is perpetuated. It's vile, it's uncivilised, and I'm really glad that SA society is now mostly at the point where this sort of thing just isn't done anymore.

We used to play a SA version back in the day. The line would not be holding hands but would need to tackle the runner trying to break through the line to get to the other side.

that's the game we played when I was in the home. I ran towards the line and stopped because I didn't want to get hurt. instead the girls ran forward and tackled me and I fell flat on the back of my head. I got encephalitis because of it. not nice.
