A fight between two 16-year-old boys at their school has ended with one in a critical condition and the other in jail.

The one, known to his friends as Phumba, was stabbed in the temple by a classmate at Roodepark High School in Roodepoort on the West Rand on Tuesday.

Pupils said the attacker, nicknamed Zulu, had been teasing Phumba incessantly.

Phumba stood up and told him to stop.

But Zulu ignored him, so Phumba got up, pushed him and then punched him.

"Zulu picked up a wooden plank that he was working on and started pushing Phumba with it," a classmate said.

"Then Zulu picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed Phumba in the head. It went in so deep he struggled to pull it out.

"Phumba started bleeding from his head and his mouth.

"The teacher went crazy; running everywhere screaming that he didn't know what to do. Then he called the police."

Netcare 911's Nick Dollman said the boy's condition was critical.

"The injuries were life-threatening and when we arrived he was unconscious and not responding."

A boy has been arrested and will be charged with the attempted murder.

Pupils said Tuesday's fight was not the first serious incident at the school.

A Grade 8 pupil said he was stabbed in 2007.

 How can anyone do that to another person?! Sick! Sick! Sick!

We have our incidents here, nothing too hectic though
Timone and Pumba :D

Nice, this kind of stuff never happened when I was at school.

Exactly...and that's because if you pulled something like that you would be instantly expelled and you'd face criminal charges (consequences). You'd get your arse jacked (consequences and discipline) for doing far less. Call me sadistic or whatever but it worked and kept us all well in line and nobody of my age that I know has suffered any emotional scarring from getting a hiding every now and then.

I know the report said he would be charged with attempted murder but the mention of similar incidents and for it to even get to the point of stabbing someone in the head with scissors precisely indicates that there are no longer such things as accountability and discipline...and not only in schools either as is apparent.

Anyone remember the kid from John Orr in the 80's who died in hospital after being hit by his class mate? Apparently the guy who hit him was not the violent type but had been teased day in and day out by this guy... he snapped as anyone would and hit the guy... apparently he died in hospital...

The moral of the story is... rage + hormones are dangerous... you might not be intending to do what you end up doing... it's a fine line.

Boxing gloves, a ring and a referee...

The violence in schools today it unbelievable, we never had stuff like this in school or even heard about any of this. What is the world coming to???

This kind of stuff was happening in my schooling days, just depends on which school(s )you went to ...

'accountability and discipline' would be infringing on their 'human rights' :o

I thought a pupil was stabbed in a Jewish place of worship

I don't want to be a teacher in today's day and age. A large percentage of students are nothing but criminals and thugs.

Yup. Happened when I was at school. I saw it happen too. School was dodgy but did manage to produce (in my year and the preceeding year) one WP and one South African who played for the tricolours. Homework assignment: which school did I attend?

Yeah, just found and read the article. It's sad... Worst is that it was the kid who was bullied who ended up dead - never to find love, a family, see his kids grow up - the usual clichéd cowpoop. Yet the idiot who killed him still has all those opportunities. He deserves the death penalty - to have the same rights taken from him. People like that should not be part of "civilised" society...

You think this society is civilized?? I think he'll fit right in. Might be the future president.
