A fight between two 16-year-old boys at their school has ended with one in a critical condition and the other in jail.
The one, known to his friends as Phumba, was stabbed in the temple by a classmate at Roodepark High School in Roodepoort on the West Rand on Tuesday.
Pupils said the attacker, nicknamed Zulu, had been teasing Phumba incessantly.
Phumba stood up and told him to stop.
But Zulu ignored him, so Phumba got up, pushed him and then punched him.
"Zulu picked up a wooden plank that he was working on and started pushing Phumba with it," a classmate said.
"Then Zulu picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed Phumba in the head. It went in so deep he struggled to pull it out.
"Phumba started bleeding from his head and his mouth.
"The teacher went crazy; running everywhere screaming that he didn't know what to do. Then he called the police."
Netcare 911's Nick Dollman said the boy's condition was critical.
"The injuries were life-threatening and when we arrived he was unconscious and not responding."
A boy has been arrested and will be charged with the attempted murder.
Pupils said Tuesday's fight was not the first serious incident at the school.
A Grade 8 pupil said he was stabbed in 2007.
