A man arrested for killing two puppies for food will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday, police said.

The 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night when police discovered the carcasses in a freezer at his home in Pretoria North, said Constable Maanda Singo.

“The police were called after someone found the skins of the puppies in the dustbin outside the house,” he said.

“We think he killed the puppies because there was no meat (to eat) in his house, but we are not sure because he won't tell us anything. He might tell the magistrate something today.”

Singo said the man was facing a charge of animal brutality. - Sapa

Mandatory comment: Better a dog than some little child.

This does disturb me, BUT if he's doing it for food..... I dunno it doesn't make it quite so bad in some strange way.

I would rather beg for food and eat trash from green bins than slaughter little dogs.

There are vegetable farms in Tokai in Cape Town that aren't that well fenced up. If you are hungry enough you could get a very nutricious meal for no money at all.

You could make a ratatioulle even if you have only an open fire and 2/3 empty cans salvaged from the rubbish bin.

If he had done this to a chicken or goat? Are our reactions not because of our conditioning to see dogs as pets?

Can't disagree with this.

This is serendipitous (not necesarily of a pleasant value). I immediately thought that this is exactly the thing copaceptic would agree with even before you made it. I don't know why I linked you with this.

Because it is logical, would be my first guess.

*edit*

I see you cunningly misspelled my name there, Prickard. Why do I get the impression you are not very fond of me? :D

I love dogs but then I also love sheep, cows and I just love ducks so much.... thing is people use most of those as food. This guy just added dog to the list.

I have dogs it makes me sad but I don't think he should be locked up if he is sane... if he's crazy by all means take him away we have enough crazy people thx

news24 says 4 dogs. 2 of which belong to the owner of the flat he's renting.

Stray dogs sure, but other people's dogs? Not nice.

^^

I would kill him if he ate my dogs .... no two ways about it.

Oh crap, sincerely that was not my intention. Although for one who types alot each day, subconsciously a piece like "cetic" easily gets typed as "ceptic". Given that I've a triple brandy and coke doesn't help my visual or mental acuity. Hence, never take what I say in the evenings too seriously.

Goodness no, I like you, you are sometimes just too liberal for me.

I retract my Prickard then, it was intentional, and, I thought, retaliatory. :D

How can someone be too liberal? :p

For someone who is mostly too conservative you can easily be too liberal.

I most often gauge if I'm talking sense (which seemingly doesn't happen that often) by what you say.

Keep it up.

If it was his own dogs he ate then by all means, the notion that we cannot eat poor little puppies but about everything else is fine is silly.

If however (as someone pointed out) it was indeed someone else's puppies, it is not his right to eat them and he should get whatever the fair punishment is.

If he is just bonkers then throw him in a looney bin.

I see nothing wrong with eating dogs, if the man is hungry then he can eat dogs. Eating someone else's dogs is wrong and he should be locked up for that.

I once watched a documentary called Earthlings (watch from 10:00 min to 17:00 min) about unwanted dogs that are killed every year. Instead of letting those dogs get killed because no one wants them and then burn them or throw them away, wouldn't it be better if those dogs are killed and then get given to the poor so they can feed? Less wastage! We have been preconditioned by society and largely the western culture that dogs are a man's best friends and would be despicable if dogs are eaten. For a poor country such as South Africa, adopting the Chinese culture of eating dogs will be a good idea.
