I am looking to purchase my first car. At the moment I only have my learners license, but want to get comfortable driving one car before taking my test. I am considering both manual and automatic cars and have about R80 000 max to spend. Does anyone have tips on what cars I should be looking at, maximum mileage, where to get the best deal in Cape Town, etc?

You understand that you have to get your licence first right? You shouldn't be buying a car if you are not comfortable driving.

i10, Picanto or an older Polo. All good cars to get.

Uhm, im not sure how you'r going to insure that without a licence. Do insurance companies insure with learners licences?

Guy: Ford Figo. Trend if you can find one with reasonable kms.

Girl: i10/Picanto

The only way to truly learn is by having your own car.

Yes...but unless you are paying cash, you cannot finance a car without a licence.

All rather scary if we have unlicensed drivers buying cars...

There is no law against unlicensed people buying cars. There are also many legitimate reasons why an unlicensed person might want to buy a car, not least of which is learn to drive. As long as the person fulfills the conditions of their learners license, i.e. driving with a suitably licensed person, then I don't see any problem.

There are countless ads for unlicensed people to buy cars. Can't be illegal I imagine.

You guys recommending an i10 and a Figo, can you really get those for R80k?

Well my picks are;

1.2l Chevrolet Spark 2012
1.1l Hyundai Atos GLS Prime 2011/2012 - I learned to drive in these, *** cars holy crap I hated that thing. But still, it's a decent car and won't cost R80k so you can spend 10k on driving lessons hahahaha.
1.1l Kia Picanto 2011
1.0l Suzuki Alto

More enthusiastic picks

2008 Polo Trendline 1.4l
2009 Suzuki Swift 1.5l

Yes they should go and buy the license before they buy the car.

You've lost me on this one - are you saying that there are adverts out there for unlicensed drivers to come and buy cars??

:erm: Don't laugh, I saw that happen at VW - and the "auntie" who bought her licence was written off at the first robot she had to cross, about 50 metres from the dealership - one GTi stone dead! :(

Its quite a common thing these days I know of a few people who bought theirs. Someone also said to me that when you first start driving everyone has at least a few accidents so they dont mind crashing. You can see it daily on the roads these days with people doing the strangest things.

God help us all - with an attitude of....well, I'm going to have an accident, so who cares...is just diabolical!

No wonder we have such a screwed up safety record on our bloody roads!

WTF happened to people taking pride in what they do - learning to be the best bloody driver that they can??!! This is bloody ridiculous!

Of course! You can even get financing! Pretty sure it's illegal though, when I purchased my bike the dealership said without my learners I would have to pay cash. So I bought it and it sat at the dealership for a week or two until I got my learners.

Its not just with driving though there is generally a very low standard of pride, responsibility, accountability etc. its scary.
